In the hospital room, Alpha Adrian sat beside my bed, while Cassie dozed on the waiting room couch.
He’d been quiet since we arrived.
I had nothing to say to him.
“Go home,” I finally said.
“Cassie’s here with me.”
Alpha Adrian’s gaze dropped.
“Let me stay. There’s nothing waiting for me at home. Someone should watch your IV.”
I studied him for a moment, then said nothing, closing my eyes.
Alpha Adrian looked up.
He watched me all night.
At some point, he rested his head near my neck.
He ached to turn back time, to undo his mistakes, to tear out his own heart to prove he’d never stray again.
But deep down, he knew-we were done.
The night stretched on, endless, as memories flooded him.
He remembered the first time he saw me: in my school uniform, high ponytail swinging, my slender neck and
glowing face like a proud, radiant swan. One glance, and his heart had exploded like fireworks.
Our first kiss-he’d stolen it, and I’d ignored him for days, blushing and glaring whenever he came near.
So many memories crashed over him.
The sweeter they were, the tighter he clung, the sharper the pain.
We’d given each other our best years.
He should’ve been the one to hold my hand forever.
The night was too short.
Dawn crept in too soon, but he selfishly wanted to stay, to stretch this moment into eternity, to freeze time.
At first light, he left.
I opened my eyes silently, watching his retreating figure.
I hadn’t slept.
It was like that night he’d taken Vanessa’s call on the balcony, then left the room.
Watching his back then, my last spark of hope had died.

Now, watching him go, I knew our nine-year bond was over.
Right, wrong, love, hate-all scattered on the wind.
My eyes stung faintly.
My heart felt soaked through.
I was discharged that morning. Cassie handled the paperwork.

Leaving my room, I wanted to visit Alpha Gideon-out of duty, gratitude, and as his employee, I owed my
savior and new boss a check-in.
But his room was crowded with visitors.
To avoid stirring up gossip, I decided to wait until he was back at the complex.
After leaving the hospital, I stopped by the enforcers’ station to give a supplemental statement, then headed
home.
Word was, they’d caught the wolf in black, but he denied Vanessa had hired him-claimed he was just a

Vanessa played the victim, saying she remembered nothing.

The Quinns pulled their usual stunt, flashing a healer’s note claiming she had mental health issues.
But this time, she’d stabbed Alpha Gideon. No easy way out.
After my statement, I went home.
That afternoon, Alpha Adrian sent a message through Cassie: he agreed to break the bond, offering two
billion in compensation.
“Tell her to pick a time to finalize the papers. I’ll be there,” he said.
“Got it,” Cassie replied after a pause.
She stepped into my room, relaying the message.
“Okay,” I said, nodding calmly, as if I’d expected it.
“Tomorrow, then. Ten a.m. at family court.”
“Alright, I’ll let him know,”
Cassie said, sighing and shaking her head.
“Man, that wolf. He’s generous, I’ll give him that-two billion? But cheating? That’s unforgivable. Makes my
blood boil. If he hadn’t messed up that bad, you two could’ve been my fairy-tale romance.”
I laughed suddenly, sunlight catching my face, my eyes glinting like fractured diamonds.
“Fairy tales are for suckers, dummy.”
Cassie glanced upward.
“Fairy tale’s busted. So… what about chasing a legend next?”
At the hospital, Alpha Gideon leaned against his bed, working.
During a break to sip water, he asked casually, “How’s she doing?”
“You mean Vivian? She’s discharged,” Frank said.
Alpha Gideon’s sharp brows furrowed, his cool gaze lifting.
“She came by this morning,” Frank added, sensing his boss’s mood.
“Seemed like she wanted to see you, but there were people in here, so she didn’t come in.”
Alpha Gideon’s expression darkened further.
“Smart of her, avoiding gossip,” he said, his tone slow and clipped-hardly a compliment.
Frank couldn’t read him, but chuckled.

“She’s a thoughtful she-wolf.”
Alpha Gideon didn’t respond.
He went back to work, his face composed as ever, but Frank could tell he was in a foul mood.
Over Vivian not coming in?
To Frank, she’d made the right call-considerate, not scheming, steering clear of trouble for Alpha Gideon.
So why was he pissed?
Unless…
Frank stole a few glances, a grin tugging at his lips, his mind racing.
The next morning, I grabbed the original bond-breaking papers and drove to family court.
Set for ten, I arrived fifteen minutes early.
Alpha Adrian showed up on time.
Spotting the bruise lingering on my lip, he reached to touch it instinctively. “Still hurts?”
His movement was so sudden, I couldn’t dodge.
I wanted to snap, but his bloodshot eyes, stubbled jaw, and desolate look doused my anger. “Let’s go,” I said.
“Yeah,” Alpha Adrian muttered, but he didn’t move.
I ignored him, heading inside.
Hearing his footsteps follow, I relaxed-I’d half-feared he’d back out again.
The bond-breaking went smoothly, quickly.
