Chapter48

Cassie returned from the store, only to get a call from home-her mom had twisted her back. She told me she

had to head out right away.

“I’m fine,” I said, waving her off.

“I’ll order takeout. Go take care of your mom.”

“Call me if you need anything. Anything.”

“Will do.”

Cassie left reluctantly, but on her way out, she ran into Elliot coming down.

Sure enough, not long after, my phone buzzed-Elliot.

“Vivian’s injury is work-related, right?”

Cassie must’ve cornered him.

“She’s alone tonight, and since you’re just upstairs, could you check on her?”

Elliot grinned. “No problem.”

Cassie, clearly pleased, shot back,

“Thanks, man.”

“No problem,” Elliot said.

“I’ll let Frank know.”

He immediately called Frank, passing along Cassie’s request.

Frank, never one to shy away from a task, was all in. “Got it.”

After hanging up, he poked his head into the study.

“Alpha Gideon, Vivian’s friend ran into Elliot in the elevator. Said Vivian’s got no one to look after her tonight

and asked if we could step in.”

Alpha Gideon glanced up from his computer, silver-rimmed glasses perched on his sharp nose, his deep, eyes

cool and faintly skeptical.

“Three wolves looking after a she-wolf who can’t move around easily, at night?”

“Uh, well-” Frank faltered, caught off guard.

He and Elliot hadn’t thought it through that far.

“So, what’s your call, Alpha Gideon?”

“Check with her first. See what she wants.”

Frank nodded.

Right there, in front of Alpha Gideon, he dialed me.

“Hey, Vivian, your friend asked us to look after you tonight. Alpha Gideon wanted me to check in and see what you think.”

I, half-dozing on my recliner, jolted awake at the call.

Cassie, you sneaky she-wolf!

“My thoughts?” I echoed, trying to sound casual.

“Yeah, since we’re all wolves here, Alpha Gideon figured you might mind. So, what’s your take? You cool with it?”

Put like that, how could I say no?

I forced a polite tone. “I don’t mind, but I don’t want to trouble you guys.”

“No trouble at all!” Frank said.

“I’ve got mushroom soup simmering. I’ll bring some down.”

“That’s your soup for Alpha Gideon. I can’t just take it.”

“Then he’ll come down too, and you can share it.”

I nearly choked.

“No, no, no! Hold up, Frank! I’ve already ordered takeout!”

“Takeout?”

Frank’s voice turned urgent.

“You’re in no shape for that junk. Your body needs real nourishment. Tell you what, I’ll come get you, and you can eat with Alpha Gideon. I’ll whip up a couple more dishes.”

“No, no, no!”

“It’s settled.”

He hung up.

I stared at the phone, numb with dread.

Upstairs, in the study, Alpha Gideon eyed Frank’s smug grin and sighed.

“You’re getting bolder with age, making calls like that.”

Frank shrugged.

“Takeout’s no match for my soup. And Elliot told me Vivian got hurt on the job. You really okay with a good she-wolf like her eating alone, munching on delivery food?”

Alpha Gideon didn’t answer, just went back to typing.

“I’ll go get her,” Frank said, turning to leave.

Alpha Gideon’s voice drifted after him.

“Weren’t you stewing soup? Don’t you need to watch the pot?”

Frank froze, then slapped his forehead dramatically.

“Oh, right, my bad-old age, you know. Can’t leave the soup unattended. Guess you’ll have to go, Alpha

Gideon.”

Alpha Gideon stood, resigned.

“Fine. If I must.”

Downstairs, I’d given Frank my elevator code earlier, planning to beg him to back off when he arrived. Instead, the elevator doors slid open to reveal Alpha Gideon, dressed in a casual beige lounge outfit that softened his sharp edges, making him look almost… approachable.

“Why’s it you, Alpha Gideon?”

I asked, forcing a smile while my fingers nearly tore a hole in the throw pillow I’d grabbed.

Alpha Gideon scanned my living room with an easy grace,. “Frank’s tending the soup. Can’t leave the stove.”

So Frank just pawned it off on you?

Alpha Gideon’s gaze settled back on me. “Ready to go?”

I wanted to say no-scream it, in fact-but under his towering presence, the word stuck in my throat.

Seconds later, I mumbled, “Yeah.”

Alpha Gideon stepped closer, leaned down, and scooped me up in one smooth motion, setting me gently in

the wheelchair.

I went rigid, like a mummy in his arms.

The whole thing took less than a minute, but his breath, warm against my cheek, his body heat seeping through my clothes, his cedarwood scent wrapping around me like a blanket.

My heart raced, then slowed, then raced again, my brain short-circuiting.

Alpha Gideon noticed my stiffness and paused before standing upright.

“Did I hurt you?” he asked, his voice low and warm.

It sounded so… intimate, like a lover checking in.

It took me a moment to process what he actually meant.

“No,” I said weakly, my voice barely above a whisper.

“Good.”

Alpha Gideon straightened, pushing me toward the elevator.

Inside, my brain betrayed me, my eyes flicking to his legs.

The cursed memory of the thigh incident roared back, hot and humiliating.

Worse, I looked up to find Alpha Gideon staring down at me with a knowing, unreadable look.

h, moons, no!

Save me!

I was on the verge of suffocating when the elevator finally hit the top floor.

My palms were sweaty as Alpha Gideon wheeled me into his penthouse-a sleek, open space with a cold, minimalist vibe that screamed Alpha Gideon: clean lines, dark wood, floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked

the pack lands.

Instead of heading to the dining area, he took me to his study.

“Dinner’s not ready yet. Might as well do something productive while we wait.”

Do something?

What kind of something?!

As he closed the study door, my grip tightened on the wheelchair’s armrests.

Alpha Gideon, oblivious to my panic, pushed me to his desk.

My eyes widened.

Is he gonna lift me onto it?

“No way! I’m out!”

I spun the wheelchair, ready to bolt, my wolf yelping in alarm.
