Chapter 46

“Alpha Gideon, let’s go help Vivian out,” Frank urged, ignoring the risk of drawing his disapproval.

Elliot, less bold but clearly agreeing, chimed in.

They couldn’t just leave me sitting there in a wheelchair, gawked at by strangers like some sideshow.

Alpha Gideon lifted his gaze, his tone dry as dust.

“If you want to help, help. Don’t act like I’m some heartless alpha.”

He gave the go-ahead.

Frank turned the car around, but before we could reach, a white BMW pulled up first.

A she-wolf in a sharp red suit-crisp trousers paired with a black silk blouse, sleek and badass-strode toward me with purpose.

“Why’re you rolling back in a wheelchair? Did Alpha Adrian lose it and try to break your legs to keep you from running?”

Cassie asked, half-teasing, half-concerned, her wolf’s worry edging into her tone.

“Let’s not get that wild with the imagination,” I replied.

“Wilder than you?” Cassie raised a brow, her lips quirking.

“It worked, didn’t it?” I grinned.

Cassie laughed, pushing my wheelchair toward her car.

“Just hope it didn’t work too well. Vanessa’s a ticking time bomb-one wrong move and she’ll explode.”

My eyes darkened.

“Even if I didn’t provoke her, even if we beat the Quinn pack and sent her to jail, as long as she’s breathing, she’ll keep stirring up trouble. Might as well use her. She’s desperate for the wolf I don’t want anymore. Isn’t that just another kind of poetic justice?”

Cassie was speechless.

She helped me into the car, stowed the wheelchair in the trunk, and we drove off from the airport-with the Bentley trailing behind, as if glued to our bumper.

Frank, puzzled, muttered from the front seat,

“Did Vivian know Alpha Adrian would ditch her, so she called her friend to pick her up?”

Elliot shrugged. “Probably just a coincidence.”

There’s no way she could’ve predicted Vanessa’s airport stunt-she wasn’t a seer.

“Maybe she didn’t want to go back with Alpha Adrian and called her friend ahead of time.”

Frank nodded.

“That tracks.”

They both glanced in the rearview mirror, wary but curious for Alpha Gideon’s take.

But he just sat there, eyes closed, his expression screaming I don’t care to dig into this.

The two cars drove in the same direction for half the journey, weaving through the sprawling pack lands of

the north.

After traffic lights and three turns, Cassie noticed the Bentley still tailing us.

I’d been dozing since getting in-drained from the airport drama-when she shook me awake.

“Vivian, wake up!”

“Hm? We there?”

I blinked, peering out the window. I lowered the window to let the guard scan my face, and the gate lifted.

Cassie, driving in, said nervously,

“That car’s been following us. How’d they get in? They live here too?”

“What?”

I jolted fully awake, looking back.

“Wait, isn’t that my boss’s car? Weren’t they ahead of us?”

Cassie’s panic spiked.

“Should we turn around?”

“No, it’s fine. That’s my new boss’s ride.”

“New? Boss?”

Her voice rose, and I could practically see the gears turning in her head.

“Long story. I’ll fill you in later.”

Cassie was thrown.

She’d seen Alpha Gideon before-at that charity gala where he’d swooped in to back me, stealing the show.

The video of that night still circulated in elite pack circles, whispered about as “the night a low-rank she-wolf charmed a high alpha.”

She’d thought I was just lucky to get a god-tier alpha like him stepping in.

Now? She wasn’t so sure it was that simple.

I rolled my eyes at her suspicious look.

“Cut it out with the theories. He’s just my boss.”

Cassie glanced at Alpha Gideon, who’d gotten out of his car by then-even more jaw-dropping in person than in the videos, his presence so strong it made the air hum.

“Just?”

I groaned. What else would he be? A knight in shining armor? Please.

Both groups got out of their cars.

Cassie, juggling the wheelchair and helping me, was a bit slow.

By the time we reached the building’s entrance, Alpha Gideon’s group was already there.

Frank, trailing behind, flashed a grin and held the door open for us.

Alpha Gideon had already stepped into the elevator.

There were three other elevators available-plenty of space to avoid crowding the boss.

But as Cassie and I hesitated, Frank, ever “helpful,” pulled my wheelchair straight into Alpha Gideon’s elevator. Fine, he meant well, but the problem was, after yanking me in, he stepped aside-leaving me face-to-face with a pair of long legs wrapped in light gray suit pants.

I stared at them, my face burning with embarrassment, my wolf cringing.

Cassie, behind me, was a mess of wide eyes and silent questions.

Alpha Gideon, his expression cool and detached, said nothing.

A weird silence hung in the air.

“Alpha Gideon, you guys drove pretty slow,” I said, craning my neck awkwardly, trying to break the tension.

I reached back, pressing Cassie’s hand. Turn the chair, quick!

But Cassie, too busy gawking at Alpha Gideon’s godlike face up close-chiseled jaw, high cheekbones, eyes like storm clouds-didn’t budge.

Alpha Gideon looked down, his gaze brushing over me.

“Don’t chat in elevators. Pick a floor first.”

His tone carried a mix of teasing.

I, mortified, twisted to hit the floor button.

“Cassie “I hissed, pinching her hand subtly.

“Oh, oh!”

She snapped out of it.

The elevator was roomier, but with five wolves and a wheelchair, a smooth turn was tricky.

Cassie stepped back, bumping into Elliot’s arm, mumbled an apology, then pushed the wheelchair forward- way forward.

My face nearly collided with Alpha Gideon’s legs.

“Whoa, whoa!” I yelped, instinctively throwing my hands out to brace myself-only to land them squarely on

his thighs.

Oh no.

My eyes widened, frozen for a full five seconds before I yanked my hands back,.

And for the first time since I’d met him, Alpha Gideon’s pale, chiseled face flushed a faint pink.

The elevator doors slid shut.
