Chapter 41

“It’ll get cold,” Alpha Adrian said. “I’ll feed you.”

“I don’t need you to feed me.”

“What, you want Alpha Gideon to do it?”

I stared at Alpha Adrian like he’d lost his mind.

“Sure, because someone with a dirty heart sees filth in everything.”

“Quit your job, and I’ll believe you and he are just colleagues.”

“Then don’t believe me.”

Alpha Adrian’s face darkened.

“You really want to keep working for him, as his secretary?”

I smirked, letting the defiance bleed through.

“Yup, exactly.”

“Vivian, you’re only cozying up to Alpha Gideon to piss me off, to get back at me!”

He was so convinced he’d seen through me.

In his mind, I must still love him, still carry him in my heart-Alpha Gideon was just a prop, a tool to make him jealous.

I let out a dry laugh, too tired to argue.

I sat up, taking the porridge from his hands.

“Alpha Adrian, thanks for visiting, but you can go now.”

Alpha Adrian let out a half-laugh, half-sigh.

He plopped down.

“I’m not leaving. Our bond isn’t broken yet. It’s my duty to take care of my mate.”

I set the porridge on the bedside table, worried he’d try to force-feed me-he was absolutely the type to do it.

Reluctantly, I picked it back up and started eating.

An Hour Later

Alpha Gideon returned, with Elliot and Camilla in tow.

I hadn’t realized Camilla had stayed all night.

Apparently, she’d stepped out earlier to grab breakfast.

No, she was just tailing Alpha Gideon, keeping tabs on him.

“Vivian, I’m so sorry about last night,” Camilla said, her voice dripping with earnestness.

“I didn’t get the full story and blindly believed Martin’s lies. I misjudged you. I hope you can forgive me.”

I felt a mix of exasperation and amusement bubble up.

I smiled, keeping my tone light and diplomatic.

“No need for forgiveness talk. Last night’s chaos was confusing for anyone. Blame Martin for being such a good liar-and you for being too kind-hearted. It’s not your fault.”

My words were a lifeline, giving her an easy out.

From the corner of my eye, I caught Alpha Gideon’s lips twitch in a subtle smile.

I bit back a sigh.

If only he knew-I wasn’t playing. I was just tired of the drama.

Camilla, clearly relieved, rushed to say,

“Thank you for letting it go, Vivian. I’m ashamed.”

Her eyes flicked cautiously to Alpha Gideon, seeking approval.

“I’ve been thinking-I don’t think I’m suited to stay here.”

But Alpha Gideon didn’t so much as blink.

He ignored her, like she hadn’t spoken at all, the deeper meaning in her words falling on deaf ears.

His gaze, warm and steady, rested on me.

“You did well this time, but don’t pull something that dangerous again. I don’t pay you to risk your life. I’ll

handle the rest. Focus on healing.”

“Got it.”

I turned to Elliot. “There’s a three-day schedule coming up. Thanks for covering, Elliot.”

“Don’t mention it, Vivian. This is on me-l never should’ve let you go to that factory alone. If anything had-”

Elliot’s guilt was cut short by a chill at the back of his neck.

Alpha Adrian was staring him down, his glare dripping with warning.

Elliot clammed up fast. He wasn’t about to get mauled.

“My mate’s too injured to keep working as your secretary, Alpha Gideon,” Alpha Adrian said. “She’s not fit for

the job. You’ll need to find someone else.”

I opened mouth to snap back, but Camilla jumped in first.

“Since her mate’s saying so, don’t push her, Alpha Gideon. I’ll come back to the main pack and be your

secretary.”

Alpha Adrian stirring up trouble was one thing, but Camilla jumping in to take advantage of the chaos?

Alpha Gideon’s face remained unreadable, his deep, striking eyes shifting from their earlier warmth to something darker.

He didn’t look at anyone else, only at Vivian.

“Do you want to quit?”

“Absolutely not!”

I shot back without hesitation.

Alpha Adrian’s face turned stormy, his jaw tight.

Camilla’s glare was just as icy, brimming with resentment.

Alpha Gideon, though, let a faint smile tug at the corners of his eyes.

“Good to know.”

“The healers says your leg’s gonna need at least a week to heal. You want to head back to the Cloud Pack to recover? I can arrange a plane for you.”

“No need for a special trip,”

“We came together, we can leave together.”

Having his private jet fly just for her felt a bit much.

“Alright, together it is.”

Alpha Gideon’s smile deepened, a glint of amusement in his eyes.

He then left with Elliot in tow.

Camilla, who’d clearly had more to say, hesitated for a few seconds when she saw Alpha Gideon leave.

In the end, she chased after him.
