Chapter 32

A long arm shot out, blocking Camilla’s collapsing body mid-fall.

“Camilla, I know you’re not drunk. Cut the act!”

Alpha Gideon’s patience had snapped, his voice a low, dangerous growl that vibrated in the air.

Camilla’s eyes flew open, clear as glass, but sharp with resentment.

“Do you have to be like this?”

“That’s my line,” he snapped.

“Either sit up straight or get out!”

The driver didn’t dare breathe.

I couldn’t help it-I stole another glance in the rearview mirror.

Camilla’s misty eyes widened, tears pooling but refusing to fall.

“Stop the car!” she shrieked suddenly.

The driver didn’t move a muscle-he answered to no one but Alpha Gideon.

I, though, tensed. If she tried to jump out… I quickly told the driver,

“Lock the doors.”

Sure enough, Camilla’s hand flew to the handle, yanking hard, but the locks held fast.

Even with her reckless move, Alpha Gideon didn’t flinch.

His face was cold as stone, like he was daring he.

“You hate me that much?” she whispered.

Then she crumpled, curling her legs to her chest, burying her face.

Quietly, I reached back with a tissue, my hand halfway to her when-

“Vivian!”

Alpha Gideon’s sharp glare stopped me, his brow furrowed.

I pursed my lips, pulling my hand back.

Wolves. Not a single decent one. Either cheating in a bond or colder than ice.

He caught my indignant look and let out an exasperated chuckle.

The car rolled to a stop at the hotel.

Alpha Gideon got out, striding inside without a backward glance.

I stared after him, dumbfounded.

He said I’m responsible, and he really meant it.

I turned to Camilla, still huddled in the back.

“Camilla, want me to get you a room?”

She sat stiffly, her aura frosty, eyes glued to the floor.

After a long pause, she murmured, “No need. I’ll stay in yours.”

“Sure,” I agreed.

My suite had an extra bed, anyway.

We walked into the hotel together, and I noticed it immediately: the supposedly plastered Camilla was

walking steady as a soldier.

In the room, Camilla announced, “I want a bath.”

“You’ve been drinking-you can’t soak. Let me get you water instead,”

I urged, stepping in front of her when she made for the bathroom.

“If something happens to you, how do I explain it to Alpha Gideon? You know you shouldn’t bathe after

drinking. This is just self-pity.”

Camilla’s eyes reddened again, and I guided her to the sofa.

Why’s this icy beauty so hard on herself?

I called the concierge for a glass of water, hanging up just as my phone rang.

My new phone only had two contacts: Alpha Gideon and Elliot.

The screen lit up with his name.

Glancing at Camilla on the sofa, I figured he’d cooled off, was checking in. “Hello?”

“Come over.”

A curt command, no pleasantries.

I blinked, but replied, “Got it.”

Hanging up, I turned to Camilla.

“Alpha Gideon needs me for a bit. Stay here, I’ll be right back.”

Her head lifted slowly from the cushion, her cool eyes scanning me up and down.

A bitter smile flickered across her lips, like she’d solved some puzzle. “Go.”

I froze.

What’s with that look?

I opened my mouth to explain, but stopped,

Explaining would sound like hiding something, wouldn’t it?

Frustrated, I let it go. Whatever. Time will clear it up.

I headed out, swiping my keycard to enter Alpha Gideon’s suite.

Elliot and I had cards for quick access-seemed normal before, but after Camilla’s look?

It felt… off.

Inside, he stood by the window, unbuckling his belt.

“Alpha Gideon, you-you-”

“I’m hungry,” he said, his gaze landing on me, voice slightly husky,

I nearly bolted.

My wide, panicked eyes and retreating steps must’ve confused him

“I mean my stomach’s hungry,”

“Oh. Oh, you meant food. Scared me there,” I laughed, relieved, my heart still racing,

I wanted to bite my tongue off.

Coughing awkwardly, I moved to the phone, dialing room service, forcing a calm tone.

“Alpha Gideon, what do you feel like eating?”

“Whatever.”

“Whatever” is the worst order in the world,

Turning back, I noticed he’d put the belt back on.

“Vivian, you should know Elliot handled all this before you,” he said coolly.

“Elliot had to do this too?”

Alpha Gideon waved a hand, dismissive.

“Out.”

I left, walking a few steps before stopping short, banging my head against the wall. Idiot. Idiot.

Elliot, rounding the corner, caught the bizarre sight.

He started toward me, no doubt to ask what the hell I was doing, but a call from Alpha Gideon pulled him away. He headed into the suite instead.

Later, I heard bits of their conversation through the door.

Room service had arrived, and Elliot’s stomach was growling, so Alpha Gideon let him stay to eat.

“So, Vivian was killing it at poker-why’d you switch?”

Alpha Gideon asked casually, wiping his mouth with a napkin.

Elliot laughed.

“She’s fearless. I was worried at first, but then she got cocky, nearly went all-in. I thought I’d have a heart

attack. Had to make an excuse to get her out-she thinks she’s a card shark now.”

There was a pause.

Then Alpha Gideon’s voice, sharp with sudden interest: “She went out?”

My breath hitched.

Oh no. He didn’t know.

I backed away from the door, my mind racing.

So that’s why he’d sounded so icy earlier.

He thought I’d left the game without permission.
