Alpha Gideon turned, his gaze softening as he looked at me, his tone polite and warm.
“I heard someone questioning your honor and couldn’t help but speak up without your permission. Hope I
didn’t cause you any trouble.”
I swallowed my shock. “…I’m the one causing you trouble.”
“Want me to clear things up for you?”
“If it’s not too much hassle.”
I fought to keep my breathing steady.
He’d shown up, and saying no would be plain foolish.
The she–wolves in the room were practically swooning.
A wolf that gorgeous, with such refined, gentlemanly charm–his low, attentive voice and that subtle glance could melt anyone.
Alpha Gideon faced the crowd. “Last night, I saved Vivian.”
“I was meeting a client. As I was leaving, I saw Vivian in the corridor, out of it. The wolf helping her looked shifty, so I had the staff check things out. We went in together and got her out in time, unharmed.”
He laid it out clearly, leaving out messy details that could spark rumors.
His account was airtight–both a testimony and a shield against anyone looking to twist the story.
I marveled at his thoughtfulness.
But why would a wolf this meticulous “wander” into this mess and get himself tangled up
? Was it… pity?
Was I that pathetic, sparking some big–shot sympathy?
My curiosity kept my eyes on him, and every bit of that admiring gaze landed squarely in Alpha Adrian’s view.
Alpha Adrian’s fists clenched, his alpha aura spiking with tension.
The Blackwood and Quinn packs stayed silent.
Vanessa tried to stir trouble, but Meredith clamped a hand over her mouth.
The guests nodded, fully convinced.
The Hartley pack’s alpha heir stepping up for me?
That carried weight.
Even if I’d been with nine wolves, with ironclad proof, everyone would’ve turned a blind eye.
Questioning Alpha Gideon was like slapping the alpha heir in the face

. But his attention to me also confirmed nothing had happened.
No matter how pitiful a beauty, if she were truly tainted, even Alpha Gideon’s compassion wouldn’t stretch
that far.
“Thanks for saving my mate!”
Alpha Adrian stepped forward, slinging an arm around my shoulders, staking his claim, his wolf marking the air with possessiveness.
Before Alpha Gideon could respond, I shoved his hand off, my face cold.
“Alpha Adrian, you don’t get to thank him for me! And I wasn’t kidding about breaking our bond. You signed the papers. Tomorrow noon’s the end of the cooling–off period!”
Alpha Adrian’s mind and heart felt like they’d been blown apart.
His voice trembled with panic,. “You really want to shatter our bond?”
But my eyes held only steely resolve.
I glanced at my watch.
“The enforcers are almost here. Instead of worrying about our bond, you should be thinking about your precious Vanessa and your mom. Oh, and you’re not off the hook either–Vanessa said you were in on it last
night.”
Alpha Adrian’s eyes widened, veins bulging.
“You think I’d do that to you? I’d never hurt you! Our bond-”
I stared at him, then let out a bitter laugh.
“Never hurt me? How do you even say that with a straight face?”
“You think I just found out about you and Vanessa?”
“I’ve known for ages–every date, every night, every getaway…”
“You ever felt a blade stab through your heart, but you don’t die? Just linger, carved up night after night, like you’re being tortured in the deepest pits? What did I do wrong? How did I ever betray you?”
My voice was soft, almost gentle, but every word bled with pain, my wolf crying out for the bond that had
withered.
Alpha Adrian could barely breathe.
My words were needles piercing his heart.
He regretted it all–he’d been bewitched, lost.
He didn’t want to break our bond. He couldn’t lose me!
Alpha Gideon, during our exchange, had turned away.

Whether by design or chance, he stood in front of me, shielding my expression from the crowd, though my
voice carried faintly.
Outside, a pack of uniformed enforcers marched in, their boots thudding.
They approached the Blackwood and Quinn packs, flashing a detainment order, and took Vanessa, Evelyn,
and Alpha Adrian away.
Vanessa wailed like a banshee as they dragged her off, but the Quinns were powerless.

The evidence–witnesses, recordings–was undeniable.
And now Alpha Gideon was backing me.
Both packs scrambled to call their lawyers.
Soon, the banquet hall cleared out. Alpha Gideon and Elliot left first.
I waited until Alpha Gideon was gone before stepping out.
Instead of heading straight home, I wandered to the park behind the hotel, slumping against a tree,

exhausted.
The ground lights cast a dim glow, my red dress making me look like a vengeful spirit
I’d already pieced together who the mastermind was, who the accomplices were.

I knew Alpha Adrian hadn’t been part of it, that Evelyn had only helped Vanessa lure me to the room. But
when I called the enforcers, I didn’t clarify.
I wanted them all dragged in, questioned, punished.
I hated Alpha Adrian. He deserved this.
Tap, tap, tap…
Footsteps approached.
As they drew closer, a rich, woody scent filled the airw.
I looked up lazily.
The faint light, like a gossamer veil, spilled through the grass, carving out the chiseled lines of his face.
His eyes, half–hidden in the shadows, were unreadabl.
“You pulled off your revenge. Shouldn’t you be celebrating? Why’re you out here zoning out?”
“…Just tired.”
And why are you following me?
Alpha Gideon was quiet for a moment.
“If you’re tired, go home and sleep.”
I stood quickly. “You’re right. I’m heading back now. See you, Alpha Gideon!”
I took a few steps in my heels, then glanced back, adding, “Thanks for today!”
Alpha Gideon just shook his head, amused.
I entered the building’s lobby and took the elevator.
When the doors slid open, I froze.
Alpha Gideon was standing inside.
I stepped in, nerves jangling, and pressed my fingerprint to unlock my floor.
I flashed an awkward smile, grasping for small talk. “Alpha Gideon, you tired too?”
“Yup, heading back to crash.”
“Same here.”
“So?” Alpha Gideon tilted his head, his expression cool, almost teasing.

My brain short-circuited.So? What was that supposed to mean?
I mentally replayed our exchange. He said he was going back to sleep. I said I was too. So…
So what?!
How was I supposed to respond to that?
