Chapter 23
I hit the ground hard, the impact jarring my bones.

Alpha Adrian was still reeling from my demand to break our bond when Vanessa’s venomous words struck
him like a bolt of lightning.
“Alpha Adrian, she’s tainted! Last night, she was with nine wolves, one of them carrying the rot! She’s filthy, ruined–a total mess! You can’t possibly still want her!”
Vanessa’s spiteful tirade poured out, jealousy and desperation clouding her judgment.
She didn’t stop to think that her words could expose her own crimes. All she cared about was making Alpha Adrian despise me.
The banquet hall fell into stunned silence.
Nine wolves in one night?
One with the rot?
True or not?
But then the question hit everyone: How did Vanessa know so much?
Evelyn’s face drained of color, her body swaying as if she’d caught the scent of a wraith.
I picked myself up off the floor.
I fixed Vanessa with a look reserved for carrion.
“I hadn’t even started settling the score, and here you are, spilling your own secrets. Stupid and vicious.”
Turning to Evelyn, I continued,
“This is your prized she–wolf? The mate you’re so proud of? The one you’ll drag into your schemes, your
crimes, and straight to the pack’s prison?”
Evelyn’s throat felt stuffed with thorns, words failing her.
Alpha Adrian’s eyes burned with a dark, terrifying fury.
The Quinn pack grew uneasy.
The guests started piecing it together.
Could Vanessa and Evelyn have set me up?
It would explain why I’d stormed in like this, ready to tear the place apart.
My wrist was injured, hinting at violence.
No she–wolf, no matter how wild, would throw herself at nine wolves, one with the rot, just to ruin herself.
If Vanessa and Evelyn were behind it, that was next–level cruelty.

“Why are you all staring at me?”
Vanessa screeched, still oblivious to the hole she was digging.

“Don’t listen to her! She’s the one who went wild, chasing heat! She’s the one with the rot–stay back, or you’ll
catch it!”
Her rant was cut short as Alpha Adrian’s hand shot out, seizing her throat.
He dragged her close, his eyes blazing with murderous rage.
“What did you do to her? What did you do?”
Vanessa gasped, clawing at his arm, barely able to breathe.
For the first time, real fear hit her–he looked like he might tear her throat out right there.
The Quinn brothers snapped into action, prying Alpha Adrian’s hand off and pulling Vanessa behind them,
their own auras flaring in defense.
“Alpha Adrian, cool it!”
Damien barked.
“My sister might’ve just been talking nonsense.”
Meredith Quinn, the third daughter of the Quinn pack, jumped in to defend her sister.
“Even if it’s true, you can’t just accuse Vanessa without proof! What if Vivian got lonely, strayed from the den,
and got caught messing around? Word got back to Vanessa. Now that she’s exposed, she’s pulling this pity
act to frame Vanessa!”
I almost laughed but held back, refusing to bicker with Meredith.
I knew some wolves still had more to perform.
Sure enough, Vanessa, catching Meredith’s cue, put on a pitiful act, tears sliding down her face
. “Alpha Adrian, how could I do something like that? It was my friend–she saw Vivian at a rogue den, slipping
into a room. And get this: right before, she saw a pack of wolves go in, one of them a known outcast who’s
got the rot.”
“I wasn’t going to say anything, but she went too far just now.”
“Love doesn’t care about who came first. You’re bound, sure, but there’s no spark left. We’re the real deal.
She’s the outsider! She needs to step aside!”
Her shameless logic turned stomachs, especially among the pack’s she–wolves.
But out of respect for the Quinn pack’s alpha blood, they held their tongues.
Alpha Adrian’s face remained dark, unrelenting, his claws twitching at his sides. “You stand by what you’re
saying?”

“I swear! I swear on my wolf’s heart! If I’m lying, let the rot consume me from the inside out!”
Vanessa declared.
She shot me a smug glance.
No proof, huh?
If you had any, you wouldn’t be standing there so quiet.
Vivian, you can make all the noise you want.
Alpha Adrian’s mad now, but once he cools off, will he still want you?
Lydia, emboldened, tore into me with a string of vile insults, each one uglier than the last.
Evelyn, though, stayed silent, her unease growing, her scent sour with guilt.
I remained calm through it all.

When they’d finally run out of steam, I took a few graceful steps to the center of the hall, locking eyes with
Vanessa.
Slowly, deliberately, I repeated, “Rot from the inside out, huh?”
I shook my head. “You really don’t fear the pack’s justice.”
I pulled out my wolfstone comm and tapped it a few times, and Vanessa’s voice filled the hall.
“Alpha Adrian’s not taking your calls… Like the pack of wolves we set up for you? Oh, by the way, one of
them’s got the rot, and they play rough…. We’ll hit you with a venom dart later to keep things lively…”
“Tomorrow, the whole pack’ll see you taking on nine wolves in one night… Oh, and to celebrate, Alpha Adrian
and I are announcing our bond tomorrow night… Go cry to the enforcers if you want–it won’t matter. Our
packs can crush you like an ant…”
“I took your mate, your place… and I’ll live happily ever after with Alpha Adrian, growing old together. You? You’ll just waste away in pain, haha…”
Her twisted, manic laughter echoed through the hall, sharp as a blade.
Halfway through, the Quinns sent someone to snatch my comm, but a young wolf guest–one of the Hart pack’s distant kin–stepped in, baring his teeth.
When the recording finished, the hall was silent again, the air thick with disgust.
Most of the guests were floored by Vanessa’s cruelty and shamelessness, and their disgust extended to
Alpha Adrian and Evelyn too.
Vanessa’s face was ghostly white.
Alpha Adrian’s gaze was like he’d flay her alive, his claws now fully extended.
Terrified, she cowered behind her brothers, her own wolf trembling in fear.

She hadn’t expected me to have a recording.
There was no talking her way out now.
Suddenly, she pointed at Evelyn, sobbing.
