Evelyn cleared her throat when I didn’t respond. “Seven tonight. Don’t show, and we stick to the original ten billion settlement.”
She hung up before I could answer.
I stared at the screen, mind racing. Cassie’s warning buzzed in my head. Two days left–was Evelyn really stirring up trouble now?
Our relationship’s always been frosty. She looked down on my background from the start, threw obstacles during courtship. After bonding, she barred me from the Blackwood territory. Holiday dinners? A gauntlet of cold remarks, like my presence stunk of cheap pine.
But that’s all.
This meeting? Probably another intimidation tactic, a last push to keep me in line while signing.
I was still debating when Frank texted an hour later: Vivian, what’s your call?
My lips tightened. Now he’s following up?
I could’ve handed the suit to the building manager–Alpha Gideon lives upstairs, after all. But ignoring him. felt risky. Pissing off Alpha Gideon won’t help my case.
Maybe drop off the suit and deal with Evelyn in one trip.
Decision made, I texted: Sounds good. What time?
Frank replied: Nine.
I put on light makeup, changed, and headed to my parents‘ first.
Adrian’s ambush at my new place tipped me off–he’s got someone tailing me. Spotted a suspicious car outside my villa, confirmed it.
Not long after I hit the road, Adrian called. “Napping?”
Traps, huh?
I snorted inwardly. “Driving to my parents‘.”
“Delivering that suit?”
“…Yeah.”
I glanced at the suit bag in the passenger seat.
Satisfied I wasn’t lying, he hung up–but the tail kept shadowing me to my parents‘.
At their modest territory, my retired professor parents were home. Dad was out, but Mom, Eleanor Hart, looked shocked. “No work today?”
“Took the day off. Bit of a cold.” I touched my throat, faked a cough.

“You never take care of yourself. Look how thin you are. Is Adrian treating you right?” Mom cupped my face, her wolf intuition seeing through the lie.
“If he’s not, I’ll dump him.” I teased.
Mom fell silent.
I changed the subject, chatting lightly. I’ll tell them about the bond breaking once it’s done–no need for them
to grieve early.

After dinner, I changed outfits, said I was meeting a friend but would stay the night.
In the elevator, I slipped on a mask and cap, slipping past the tail’s gaze.
I reached the Aman just before seven.
Exterior rustic, interior quietly lavish–rich wood, soft lights, the air thick with jasmine.
I stashed the suit at the front desk, then called Evelyn to say I’d arrived.
A staff member led me through winding halls to a room, opened the door.

Inside was a tea room, jasmine scent sharp with brewing leaves.
Evelyn sat regally in an emerald dress. “Sit.” She nodded to a chair.
“Where’s the settlement?” I cut to the chase–no time for games.
“What’s the rush? Have tea. Chat.”
I raised a brow, eyed the teacup, lifted it to sniff. “No poison, right?”
Evelyn scoffed. “Scared? Don’t drink.”
I set the cup down, pushed it away. “Better safe.”
Evelyn smirked–half–amused, half–annoyed, gearing up to jab at my “low roots.”
“Enough with the tired lines.” I cut her off, sharp. “Wanna do business? Let’s do it. No fluff.”
Evelyn’s face soured, irritation flaring like a spark.
She slid a contract across. “Sign.”

I picked it up, scanned page by page. A settlement should be one page–this was a dozen, bloated with junk.
They banked on me skimming.
I set it down calmly. “Need my lawyer to review. I’ll get back tomorrow noon.”
“Got issues? Tell me. I’ll fix.”
“Then I’ll draft a new one?”
“No. My terms or nothing.” Evelyn’s face hardened, alpha aura spiking.
I leaned back, casual. “You just said you’d fix it. Now it’s your way or else? What’s that about?”
Evelyn’s voice turned to steel. “Means sign today, or you’re not leaving.”
I didn’t snap. Pretended to think. “Fine. I’ll call my lawyer. If she says okay, I’ll sign.”
I stood, contract in hand, and bolted once through the door.
My gut screamed danger.
Those buried clauses set my nerves on edge–one stuck out: If the party engages in improper relations with
another before bond breaking, agreement is void.
On the surface, fair. But it’s a trap–easy to frame me.
I overestimated Evelyn’s conscience.
In the tea room, Evelyn dialed.
“She’s gone, took the contract. Vanessa, can you really save this settlement?”
“Evelyn, relax. Handled. Blackwood won’t pay a dime, and she’ll never dare come after you.”

“Perfect. You’re a gem, Vanessa. It’s all yours now.”
“No problem. Leave it to me.”
Evelyn sipped tea, smug.
Tomorrow night, at her charity gala, she’ll announce the Blackwood–Quinn bond–no loose ends.
As for me? Hmph.
Whatever Vanessa has planned, a little suffering won’t hurt.
Vanessa clutched her phone, eyes glinting with malice.
Tonight’s Vivian’s end.
