Chapter 16
I curled up on the couch, staring at my phone.
I typed and deleted messages to Frank, finally giving up.
What was Alpha Gideon playing at?
He sent me his measurements but didn’t want the suit?
Was he toying with me?
I couldn’t crack the big shot’s intentions and didn’t want to try.
Besides the unresolved suit, our paths wouldn’t cross again.
Footsteps echoed outside the living room.
I swiped away the chat, uncurling my legs.
“Where’d all your clothes, shoes, bags, and jewelry go?”
Alpha Adrian demanded, storming in.
My heart lurched.
He’d noticed?
What was with this jerk today?
Coming home for dinner unannounced, now snooping in the closet?

“Clothes and shoes are at the dry cleaner’s. Bags and jewelry are getting polished,” I said, my voice calm
despite the storm in my chest, feigning confusion.
“All of them?”
“Yeah, why not?.”
Alpha Adrian found it odd but bought my explanation.
I had been home a lot lately, always bustling around, cleaning.
“No need to rush. You’ve got time to sort things out later,” he said.
“I’m heading out on that trip soon. Wanted the place spotless before I go.”
My words were flawless, but they left a sour taste in Alpha Adrian’s mouth.
Spotting a navy–blue bag on the couch, he reached for it. “This for me-”
“No.”
I cut him off, lunging to stop him.
Our words hung, unfinished, as we froze.

Alpha Adrian’s face darkened.
I caught myself, adding, “It’s for my dad.”
Disappointment flashed across his face.
“For your dad? Didn’t think to get your mate something too?”
“You short on suits?” I shot back.
Bet you’ve got more suits in Vanessa’s bedroom than here.
Alpha Adrian was speechless.
I grabbed the bag, slipped on flip–flops, and bolted upstairs.
In my study, I heard his car peel out.
I exhaled, relieved.
The next day was Sunday, the weather perfect.
I visited the high school Alpha Adrian and I had attended.
No classes today, but a few pups in uniforms wandered the grounds.

I strolled leisurely, revisiting our past–classrooms we’d sat in, shaded paths we’d walked, the track we’d run.
Finally, I reached the grove by the lake, digging up a bottle we’d buried in a hidden corner.
It was the night before our final exams.
After study hall, Alpha Adrian had dragged me here.
In the dark, we’d used our phones for light, scribbling on paper balanced on our knees.
He’d said we’d dig it up in twenty years.
His eyes had sparkled brighter than the stars.
I smiled softly, taking our time capsule from the box.
Goodbye, Alpha Adrian.
At the same time, Alpha Adrian sat in the office, blinds drawn, door shut.
The team outside whispered, spitting in disgust.
Alpha Adrian flipped through Vanessa’s proposal, his brow furrowed.
She leaned on his shoulder, her hand teasing, stoking his desire.
Vanessa wasn’t as beautiful as me, but she was bold, wild, relentless.
Few wolves could resist that kind of pursuit.
For a wolf, the heart and body could operate separately.

“Alpha Adrian, wanna do it here…” Her hand drifted lower.
“Stop it!”
Alpha Adrian wasn’t in the mood.
He pushed her hand away, slamming the proposal on the desk.
“This is what you spent seven or nine all–nighters on?”
It was nonsense, utterly absurd.

Rubbing his temples, he missed the days when I ran the supporting department, making him feel unstoppable.
Vanessa pouted, stung by his scolding.
His phone rang.
He glanced at it, stood, and walked to the window. “Talk.”
“Vivian went out today. Visited a high school, wandered for a while, then headed to a place called Fancy neighborhood. Fancy area, tight security—only residents get in.”
Alpha Adrian’s gut twisted.
High school? Fancy neighborhood?
His eyes darkened. “You said non–residents can’t get in? What if she knows someone there?”
“If a resident vouches, she’d get in.”
“Send me the address. Keep watching.”
“Got it.”
Alpha Adrian hung up, irritated.
His side piece’s proposal was a mess, and his mate was acting strange.
Turning, he found Vanessa had followed, wrapping her arms around his waist.
“Why do you care what she’s doing? You don’t love her anymore.”
Suppressing his disgust, he pried her off, gripping her shoulders.
“Redo the proposal. Take it seriously. If you don’t get it, ask theteam leaders.”
He stormed out, face cold.
Vanessa, furious, trashed the office.
Ask for help? From those lowlifes?
Wait.

The team leaders were my people.
Was Alpha Adrian telling her to grovel to my crew?
She called the three group leaders in, tearing into them.
When one spoke up, she slapped him.
The others seethed but stayed silent.
This wasn’t a princess–it was a rabid dog.
I placed the time capsule on a shelf in my new place.
No need to toss or burn it.
It wasn’t just about Alpha Adrian–my life was more than him.
My phone buzzed. Alpha Adrian again?
Was he sensing our bond was on its deathbed, trying to cling to it?
I didn’t answer or hang up.
The ringing stopped, replaced by a text.
Rolling my eyes, I opened it–not Alpha Adrian, but Frank.
Had Alpha Gideon finally given new instructions
