Chapter 14
“Alpha Adrian, what’re you staring at?”

Vanessa tugged at his sleeve, her voice shrill with irritation at being ignored.
Trees blocked the view now, and Alpha Adrian pulled his gaze back, his jaw tight.
“Nothing.”
He focused on the path ahead, but his thoughts lingered–on that figure…
Alpha Gideon stopped by a tree to take a call, and I hung back, realizing I’d overstepped.
Retreating to a mushroom–shaped gazebo nearby, I rubbed my forehead, cursing my own stupidity.
What was I thinking, chasing after him like a lost pup?
When he finished his call, I approached, forcing a mix of embarrassment and humor.
“Alpha Gideon, you’ve got a sharp eye. I can’t even read the room–definitely not cut out to be your secretary. Sorry for the bother.”
“You followed me out here just to prove you’re not a fit?”
Alpha Gideon’s brow arched slightly, like he found the whole thing amusing.
I had no defense against his sharp tongue.
Letting out an awkward laugh, I admitted, “I was hoping to make a case, but I clearly botched my first impression, and today was a mess. I’m not your type, so I figured I’d bow out quick without stepping on your
toes.”
Alpha Gideon’s expression stayed cool, like he was weighing my words.
“You think I turned you down for those reasons?”
I blinked. “Why else?”
“You show up dressed like that for a job interview,” he said, leaning in slightly, his voice dropping to a low purr
that sent heat prickling down my spine.
“If I hired you, everyone would think I’m just chasing looks. Even if I were, I wouldn’t advertise it.”
My face flushed crimson, heat spreading from my cheeks to my ears.
He was mocking me–for Sabrina’s outfit, for the way I’d stumbled through the introduction, for even daring to
think I stood a chance.
And he was implying he wasn’t even tempted, like I was nothing more than a fly buzzing in his ear.
I didn’t bother explaining myself.
Mortified, I stammered, “Lesson learned. I’ll head out. Bye.”

I didn’t wait for his reply, hurrying out of the forest, my shoes crunching loudly on the leaves, as if the woods
themselves were laughing at me.
When Sabrina and Julian returned to find only Alpha Gideon, Sabrina frowned. “Where’s Vivian?”
“She left,” Alpha Gideon said, like it didn’t matter.
“What?” Sabrina was stunned.
“Alpha Gideon, Vivian’s seriously capable…”
He cut her off.
“Doesn’t seem like it.”
Sabrina, quick on her feet, caught the issue.
“Ugh, my bad,” she said, backtracking.
“Vivian didn’t come dressed like that. I thought her sweats were too frumpy, so I made her wear my outfit.”
Alpha Gideon gave her a wordless look, and I could picture it–cold, unimpressed, like he’d heard a hundred
excuses before.
Back home, I swapped out of the borrowed clothes, yanking the skirt off like it burned me, and slumped at my
vanity, deflated.
Had leaving Helixon–and Alpha Adrian–really reduced me to this?
Begging for a job, making a fool of myself, letting Sabrina dress me up like a doll?
Once the gloom eased, I grabbed my phone to apologize to Sabrina.
I’d silenced it to focus on the golf outing, and now it lit up with missed calls–Alpha Adrian’s, Sabrina’s, Alpha
Adrian’s again.
I ignored his and dialed Sabrina.
“Hey, sorry, I wasn’t feeling great–low blood sugar. Took off without telling you.”
Sabrina paused. “…I’m the one who should apologize. I messed up the outfit thing.”
We were both sharp enough to skip the details, to let the awkwardness hang without picking at it.
“No worries,” I said.
“I was just taking a shot. You’ve already done me a solid, and I won’t forget it.”
“Forget favors,” Sabrina said.
“I cleared up the outfit thing with Alpha Gideon, but he didn’t bite. I got his number from Julian–wanna take
another swing?”
I thought for a moment, then shook my head, even though she couldn’t see me.

“Nah, Hartley Group’s not in my stars. Maybe it’s for the best.”
Sabrina didn’t push, just sighed.
“Alright. Call me later, okay?”
After hanging up, I crawled into bed, my mood as heavy as my body.
Drifting off, I heard the bedroom door creak.
“Mmph…”

I rolled over, squinting to see Alpha Adrian standing by the bed, his face cold as frost, like he’d been waiting for me.
Not in the mood to deal with him–with his questions, his demands, his fake concern–I flipped over, pulling the blanket over my head, blocking out the light, blocking out him.
“You’ve been home sleeping all day? Didn’t go out?”
Alpha Adrian sat on the bed, his tone probing, like he was trying to catch me in a lie.
I stayed silent, hoping he’d take the hint.
“Saw a figure at the golf course today that looked a lot like you.”
My eyes snapped open. He’d seen me.
What a joke.
He and Vanessa had already given me a front–row seat to their “live show” over the phone, and now he had the nerve to question my whereabouts?
To act like I owed him an explanation?
I wanted to snap, So what if I was there?
But I worried he’d hassle Sabrina, drag her into our mess, and she didn’t deserve that. So I bit my tongue, keeping quiet.
Alpha Adrian leaned closer, lifting a corner of the blanket, his breath hot on my neck.
His eyes scanned my skin for marks–like he cared, like he had any right to.
Finding none, he relaxed slightly but pressed, “So, did you go out today?”
“Didn’t go anywhere. Spent the afternoon cleaning the yard. I’m trying to sleep–leave me alone.”
I yanked the blanket back over my head, repulsed by his closeness, by the way he smelled like pine and
Vanessa’s perfume, a sickening mix that made my stomach turn.
He seemed convinced I wasn’t lying, or maybe he just didn’t care enough to push.
Either way, he dropped it, standing up and walking out, the door clicking shut behind him.

Chapter 11
I lay there, staring at the dark, and wondered when I’d stop feeling like a ghost in my own life.
