Chapter 21
Kyle stuck to me like glue for the rest of the week. He had taken it upon himself to be my bodyguard which earned me confused or dirty locks from girls vying for Kyle’s attention. I had a feeling Aiden had put Kyle up to it although Kyle probably would have become my shadow without the prompting from Aiden.
Noah made no appearances much to my relief. My throat still hurt a few days later but by the time Friday came around, the pain was gone and all I was left with was ugly bruises which I hid under turtle neck tops or scarves.
Friday came with a cool breeze and a happy birthday recording from my brother that included a cryptic message about some news he had for me. It brought a smile to my face and I felt some of my worries melt away but curiosity also had me wondering what the news was. It felt like months since I last spoke to Liam even though it was only two weeks ago. Time differences and his work made it difficult to talk more, Hopefully no one had reported back to him about what was going on here. I didn’t need him lecturing me as well.
The day itself wasn’t anything special. I had school still but Kyle was there from the moment I came downstairs until I started my shift at the diner. Only once he was convinced I was safe inside the diner with Barry and Shirley did he leave.
Around 9pm I was tidying up the counter when the bell above the door rang signalling someone walking in. Naturally I looked up expecting a customer but found Tammy wandering in with her summer smile, fiery curls and creamy skin. She had on black jeans and her army green Parker made her locks look like flames as they bounced around her shoulders.
“Hey birthday girl!” Tammy sang with a grin as bright as the sun.
“Hey Tammy.” I replied, my smile nowhere near as vibrant as hers. “How did you know I was here?”
I’ve seen your uniform before, silly.” Her giggle floated in the air like birdsong as she took a seat on one of the many stools at the counter. “Also Kyle told
me.”
“Why are you here though?” I asked, watching her cautiously.
“Can’t a girl spend time with a friend?” Tammy feigned a pout before a mischievous smile crept onto her lips making her look like a nymph. “Also I wanted to walk you home.”
‘I don’t finish for another hour though…”
“You can go now.” Barry’s voice came from behind me making me turn. “Shirley and I can close up. Go enjoy the rest of
“No Barry, I can finish up.” I argued.
“Don’t be silly. You’re only eighteen once.” Barry smiled. “Go on. We will see you next weekend.”
your birthday.”
Tammy squealed at that, jumping from her seat and grabbing my hands from across the counter so my focus came back to her.
‘Get your stuff and let’s go celebrate!” She announced, grey eyes sparkling with excitement.
Half an hour later we were walking through the front door of the house. The heating had kicked in several hours before so that we were engulfed in wh the moment we closed the front door. The living room light and top hall light was on, suggesting Aiden had been home at some point but neither he no Kyle were in sight, leaving me to wonder where they were and why Tammy was with me.
“So please don’t be mad but Kyle told me what happened at school. Tammy spoke softly, her smokey grey eyes watching me carefully.
“Oh, it’s nothing.” I felt my cheeks heat up and I shuffled awkwardly.
“Well nothing or not, it’s not okay for someone to go around doing stuff like that.” Tammy replied, a small pout of anger forming on her oxblood lips. “However, I want to do something for you besides the chocolate cake.”
I wasn’t sure what Tammy had in mind but the sparkle in her eyes lured me in and I was unable to argue as she sat me down at the small dining table in the corner of the living room before disappearing to the kitchen and coming back with two beer bottles and what appeared to be a small hard briefcase. I could feel the excitement radiate off of Tammy as if she were a child on Christmas morning. Her enthusiasm swept you away so easily that it was hard to think straight sometimes.

Oh I shouldn’t drink. I blushed when Tammy opened the beers and set one in front of me.
“Don’t be silly, it’s your birthday and I’m going to make sure you enjoy it.” Tammy announced as she began rummaging through the briefcase which on elect inspection was filled with makeup and brushes.
And with that, she approached me with a tube of foundation.
A/N: So Noah will be back but for now things are going to be on the up until they really spiral. Hold on tight!
