Chapter 15
“Yeah well,” I huffed, crossing my arms over my chest feeling foolish and no doubt my red cheeks told Kyle the same thing. “It wasn’t totally your fork. I shouldn’t have overreacted.”
“So are we friends again?” Kyle asked, voice tiny but hopeful, eyes bright with it.
1 nodded a little. I couldn’t stay mad and while I knew a part of me was telling me to keep my distance I couldn’t. It was impossible to dislike Kyle.
1 squealed in surprise when Kyle practically jumped me and engulfed me in a bear hug. I didn’t know what it was about this family but they gave amazing bearhugs. I chuckled a little as kyle rocked us from side to side in excitement before he pulled back with a toothy grin and eyes scrunched up like a leaf to a flame. I smiled back, not as vibrantly but I smiled nonetheless, feeling some of the weight of last night’s events lifting.
Monday came around too soon. I felt like I had barely slept which I blamed on the two males currently sleeping somewhere in the house, Friday evening events still ran through my head as if it just happened, mocking me over and over.
After Kyle and I made up, he insisted we watch a movie while babbling on about Tammy coming over and Aiden buying take out. It had left me feeling awkward and nervous but as always, Tammy had a way of breaking that with her bubbly energy and glowing presence. Aiden even lightened up and didn’t bring up Friday night. Tammy had him pretty much occupied for the rest of the weekend but on occasions, like when everyone was absorbed in the movie, I’d feel his eyes on me sending a chill down my spine each and every time.
Despite things thawing, things were still a little awkward but with a new school week here to distract me and my birthday literally four days away, I chose not to let it get to me. Instead I had a much more pressing matter to deal with.
Noah Winters.
Despite trying to put space between Kyle and myself, Kyle insisted on walking to school with me. He was in a bad mood because it was Monday but regardless, he insisted on walking with me, hands shoved into the pockets of his signature wool–lined denim jacket and sunglasses on more to protect his tired eyes rather than because it was sunny. In fact it wasn’t sunny. Slate grey clouds had settled over the city like dirty wet cotton ball buds. Autumn was in full swing now with chilling breezes, the scent of wet earth and dying leaves. I have been wearing a scarf for the past few days much to my amazement.
“Kyle, you really don’t have to walk with me if you don’t want to. I tried again as the school building began to come into view.
“Ellie, it’s my second day at this school. You can’t be trying to ditch me already!” Kyle grumbled.
“What? No! It’s just… I’m not sure the kind of crowd you want to hang out with at school.” I mumbled, adjusting my bag strap.
“And who should I be hanging out with? The jocks?”
“Well you do play football…”
Kyle snorted indignantly and shook his head. “I played football. I’m over it. Also they’re just a bunch of idiots.”
“Okay, well what about that group who always smoke behind the bikesheds?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Yeah they’re alright but Aiden will kill me if he knows I’m hanging out with that lot after last time.” Kyle shrugged before throwing an arm around my shoulder and pulling me close and giving me another toothy grin. “You’re stuck with me.”
I tried.
“You look hungover wearing those sunglasses.” I teased.
“Who says I’m not?” Kyle smirked.
Our attention was eventually pulled away from each other when we noticed students congregating in the parking lot with smaller groups dotted around the campus, 1 should have guessed what it was about when I saw the mixture of excited, worried and nervous looks on everyone’s faces. And yet It wasn’t until I saw who was in the middle of the crowd, enjoying the attention like some glorified king.
“What the fuck is this all about?” Kyle grumbled as he observed the same strange scene with me.
I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. My blood had run cold and the colour had drained from my face when pitch black eyes landed on me, sucking me in. Noah was

leant against a new looking Mercedes, black hair styled perfectly, white shirt and black jacket pulled over arms and chest. His usual crowd was with him, a mixture of rich kids, popular kids and jacks. Girls were subtly fawning over him while the boys were joking around, clearly pleased their esteemed leader was back.
The air was gone from my hings as his eyes slowly moved from me to Kyle before coming back to me with all the lethalness of a predator. The slight lift of a rakish eyebrow was enough to set me trembling. That casual but significant gesture said it all.
“Who’s that?” Kyle asked.
“No one.” I murmured, grabbing the sleeve of his jacket and tugging him towards the school doors to escape Noah’s glare.
