Chapter 40 – Code Red
Duke and I descended down the mountain with Ranger still on my back. The full moon’s light was bright, and I could see what looked like a thousand wolves rushing towards us. In the front leading the wolves was a large black Alpha wolf with blue eyes. I instantly recognized Kruz, Alpha Knox’s wolf. The other wolves came to a halt as many set eyes on Lia for the first time, they lowered their heads. Kruz walked up to Duke and nodded his head, then he turned towards me and sniffed the air.
“What happened to Ranger? Where have you been?” He asked us through the mind link.
I looked at Duke and his eyes glazed over; his Alpha voice rang through the mind link to every pack member.” Attention Crescent Moon, we have found the traitor! Earlier this evening, Alpha Jordan Monroe, attacked your Alpha and Luna. He has gathered rogues just outside our territory who planned to attack our most vulnerable pack members first, the elders and pups, while the pack took their traditional midnight run with the new Luna.
Angry howls rang out across the territory.
“Alpha Jordan has escaped and could be hiding in the territory; his scent is fresh cut grass and oak. I order the launch of CODE RED.”
“What’s code red?” I asked through the mind link.
“Let’s get to the castle and I’ll explain.” He linked back.
The other pack wolves started moving with purpose and we ran towards the castle. Payton was standing at the castle doors with the guards and tossed us blankets to shift. Max came running down the stairs and lifted Ranger off my back.
We shifted and I draped the blanket around myself. Megan appeared at the stairs with shirts and sweatpants for all of us.
“Tonia, our guests stay in their rooms and lock their doors.” Diesel said to our house manager and she nodded her head. “Everyone else to my office!”
“What should I do with him?” Max asked while holding Ranger up.
“Take him to Dr. Ross and get back to my office.”
Our chief warriors and trackers joined us in the office. We had five chief warriors but without Athena, we were
down to four. The chief warriors all led squads of warriors and trained pack fighters, having about three
hundred wolves on each of their teams.
“Dad, do you know if the castle has/construction plans or any maps or charts? It seems the castle has secret passages the bastard was using.” Diesel asked.
“I’ll check with Tonia.” Alpha Knox said and mind linked her.
“Sam, I want every corner of this castle checked and scented for him. I don’t know if Jordan returned to the castle through a passage or if there’s another exit point.
“Why would Jordan do such a thing?” Max asked.

Diesel explained everything, who Alpha Jordan really was, what he did and what his plan was. “There isn’t a shred of evidence in him that would suggest he’s a LaRue.” Payton said.
“Code Red is in effect; we are preparing for war. The patrols have not picked up any sign of rogues in the territory. If they climb over the mountain it could be morning before they breach.” Diesel said.
“With any luck the avalanche buried some of them.” Zeke said.
“After everyone is in position let’s make sure the backup defenses are ready. I also want the archers on the roof tops before sun rise.” He said. Our sixteen and seventeen year old teens were all required to master archery since they didn’t get their wolf until eighteen and could not shift.
“The elders, pups and vulnerable are being moved to the bunker under the arena.” Elliot said.
“I’ll want a bonfire burning nearby.” I said.
“You’re not fighting.” Diesel said.
“Like hell I’m not!” I replied.
“Lucy please, the pups.” He reminded me.
“I’m a golden wolf, nothing is happening to the pups.”
“You’re right, nothing is happening to them because you will be in the bunker with the vulnerable and Vannica.” He said.
“I’m not going anywhere!” Vannica said and we all turned to look at her. “My water just broke.”
Zeke carried Vannica to the infirmary and Payton was currently at the infirmary with Alpha Knox, talking to Ranger. Diesel was reviewing old castle plans and maps with Sam, our chief tracker and Elliot, trying to find any other secret passages we may have at the castle. I wanted to go with Payton to the infirmary and check on Vannica, but Diesel wouldn’t let me out of his sight.
I stood at the fireplace and stared at the flames. I could hear Lia purring now that we were safe with our mate again. Megan came and stood next to me. “I’ve been thinking.” She said in almost a whisper.
“About?” I asked.
“The prophecy from Alexis yesterday, a war is coming and a lost wolf.” She recalled.
“Do you think she was talking about this?” I asked.
Megan nodded her head. “Yes, and maybe Ranger is the lost wolf.” She added.
“Or it could be Jordan since he might be Titus’s son.” I said thoughtfully.
She paused for a moment. “You don’t think it could mean literally losing a wolf … as in death? Do
“I sure hope not.”
“Lucy, you’re the one born from Gods who will set the course.” Megan said giving me a nervous glance.
“I believe I already have.” I said and rubbed the tiny bump on my belly. “I think my great grandchild will possess all four elements in a hundred years.”
“It looks like there are two passageways.” Diesel said. “One is in the grand coat closet.”
“And the other?” I inquired.

“In this office.” He said.
We began searching for anything that could look like a button, handle or lever.
“The one in the closet is a lever.” I said.
“Like this one?” Megan pointed to the light fixture on the wall that had a small lever tucked in next to it. It almost looked like it was a part of the light fixture. Diesel pulled the lever and a section of the bookcase
turned open.
“Should we follow it?” Elliot as
“I don’t think we have time, but I also don’t want any surprises coming through them.” Diesel said thinking out
loud.
“Alpha we could send a few trackers together down both of them.” Sam suggested.
“We could try to disable the opening lever from the other side, so that it could only be opened from the inside.
“Max said.
“We need to know where this one leads out to, Sam, assemble a team. Elliot, get to the coat closet and find the lever on the other side, see if you can disable it. Max, check the arena bunker, I want it secured in ten minutes and everyone accounted for. Paul, make sure the archers and lookouts have what they need.” Diesel instructed and they all moved.
We walked to the kitchen where Diesel insisted I eat: “The pups are growing fast Lucy; twin Alpha’s will deplete Lia’s energy quick.”
“I’m famished.” Lia said practically drooling.
Diesel pulled out sandwich meat, cheese, bread and other condiments. He sat me down on top of the kitchen counter to watch as he worked on the sandwiches. He piled the layers of meat on the sandwich. Then, he lifted a slice of cheese to my mouth and I took a bite before he placed the other half in his mouth.
When he was done, he left me on the kitchen counter and stood between my legs pulling me into a hug. He dropped his head to my neck and inhaled deeply. “How are my pups doing?” He asked as he moved his hand to my stomach.
“They’re doing great.” I said and he brought his lips to mine. His lips tasted so good and all I wanted to do in this moment was spend the night wrapped up in Diesel’s arms tasting every inch of him.
“Who do I have to kiss to get a sandwich around here?” Alpha Knox said walking into the kitchen.
I flushed red and Diesel returned to the sandwich making. He also made one for Alpha Knox. We finished eating our sandwiches and Diesel was called into the hallway to speak with Sam.
“Lucy, Ranger told us what you did for him. As an Alpha, I would have let him die. As a father, I’m ‘nkful for your mercy.” He said with warm eyes and hugged me.
Diesel stepped back into the kitchen and his aura had changed. “What is it?” I asked.
“Sam found the exit point of the second chamber. It’s in the southern mountains as well, not too far from the first exit point.”
“Then the exit points are on our side of the mountains, so that’s a good thing. The castle sits in the valley, with the avalanche closing the pass, they won’t have a way in unless they climb over and we’ll have the

advantage of seeing them.” Alpha Knox said.
“That means that Jordan will still be somewhere on our side.” I said.
a po
“That’s not all they found.” Diesel told us. “They found the bodies of the missing prison guards who were on duty when Ranger was taken in the tunnel. They also found Athena, battered and abused.”
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to know the answer to my next question. “Is she … alive?”
“Barely. She’s in the infirmary.” He said.
“Son, is there something else?” Alpha Knox asked.
Diesel nodded his head. “When Sam pulled Athena down, he recognized a familiar scent on her. It was Ramos, he’s working with Jordan.”
I could feel the energy between the two Alpha’s radiating power and anger. Diesel was trying hard to control Duke and Alpha Knox’s blue eyes had turned dark. Kruz was on the surface and a low growl rippled in his
throat.
“Who’s Ramos?” I asked.
“Payton’s first mate!”
