Chapter 43 – Return
Diesel’s POV
I was seated in the back of the Escalade, looking down at Lucy’s beautiful sleeping face. Her head was resting on my chest and my hand was rubbing circles on her belly. She was always at ease listening to my
heart drumming.
Dawn was breaking on the horizon. We had about two hours left, and our caravan of black SUV’s made its way towards Dark Moon territory. Max was driving and Payton was sleeping in the front passenger’s seat. My mother was Luna of Dark Moon and was buried there. We held a funeral at Crescent Moon for my father yesterday and he would be buried this afternoon next to my mother at Dark Moon.
It’s been three days since the war. Lucy spent the first two days sleeping. Tapping into her full power was exhausting and grief weighed heavy on all of us. Looking down at her face and those full cherry lips, I’m reminded of the first time she took my breath away. The first day I pulled her out of that river after she had escaped from Dark Moon. Now, she was willingly returning to her personal hell hole, to help lay my father to
rest.
Our pack had suffered thirty–four deaths including my father. Alpha Jordan and the eight hundred others that breached our territory, had been turned to ash. My gamma, Zeke, was lucky enough to be outside the infirmary when Jordan shot him. Dr. Ross was able to act quick and remove the silver bullet in his abdomen before it poisoned him.
Zeke had stayed behind to run things at Crescent Moon while I was away. Vannica and the pup were doing great, holding baby Zach made me excited for my pups. I was lost in thoughts thinking about my pups and praying to the Moon Goddess that I would be half as good a father as mine was.
I was admiring the familiar territory when Max broke the silence. “We’re almost there.”
I caught sight of the big lake we used to swim at when we were pups. My father used to hold big family barbecue’s out there on warm summer nights, I thought about the time I used my element to flip Max and his first mate, Olivia, over in a canoe, because I was secretly jealous that he had a mate and I didn’t.
While I had wonderful childhood memories here, Dark Moon never felt like home. Crescent Moon was my home and I hope Lucy will feel the same way soon. She may have been born at Dark Moon, but it held painful memories for her. I was going to make it my life mission to fill her life with nothing but happy memories. We pulled into the long drive leading towards the main pack house. Ranger had come back in my helicopter- after yesterday’s service with our father’s casket to make arrangements. Athena traveled back with Ranger and had requested permission to switch packs. I granted it. They had both rejected their first mates, so they would both most likely not have second chance mates. Miranda had left Ranger for Jordan, so Ranger was
free to find a new Luna.
I kissed the top of Lucy’s head and spoke in her ear. “Wake up little one, we’re here.”
“You won’t be calling me little one next month when my belly is huge.” She whispered back and kissed my lips. The thought of her round with my pups made me want to have a dozen more!

north side of the property and we would be spending the night here before we drove ten hours back. We also had some unfinished business I wanted to take care of at Dark Moon. Our seven vehicle caravan pulled up in front of the pack house and we all stepped out of the cars.
“LUCY?” Beth the bully and Lucy’s previous tormentor called out. Duke felt the urge to rip her head off right here.
Ranger growled at her. “IT’S LUNA LUCY AND YOU WILL ADDRESS HER AS SUCH.”
His Gamma and Delta twins, Blake and Cole, looked so much alike, I had a hard time distinguishing who was who sometimes.
“Hello Luna, it’s good to see you again” Blake, I believe, bowed his head at Lucy smiling. Then he turned to me. “Welcome back Alpha Diesel.” He said and I nodded my head.
We went inside for breakfast in the main dining hall. All these years and nothing had changed. It felt kind of
strange and yet so familiar. I sat at the table and pulled Lucy to my Lap.
“Alpha Diesel, how good it is to see you Sir.” Davis said to me.
“Davis, the pleasure is mine. Tell me, is Rose still in the kitchen?” I asked.
“Yes Sir, she still is.” He smiled.
“Please tell her I’m requesting two of her delicious T–bone steak breakfast meals. My mate is eating for three and needs her strength.” I said and kissed Lucy who blushed.
“Coming right up and congratulations Sir.”
We ate breakfast and many curious eyes wandered in our direction. So many familiar faces and the elders all took turns coming to greet me. The one person I was hoping to see, had yet to show her face.
“Where’s Ursa?” I asked Ranger.
Everyone seemed to have hushed down and their ears were perked. The room was full of people who had mistreated my mate over the last four years. They could feel the powerful aura fill the room and assumed it was mine, when it was really Lucy’s.
“I’m holding her in a cell for treason, we will deal with her tomorrow.” Ranger said.
“And the family home?” I asked.
“It has been in Lucy’s family for generations and is rightfully hers.” Ranger told us.
“We will keep it as a vacation home for visits.” Lucy said and Ranger nodded his head.
I was a little surprised that Lucy wanted to visit Dark Moon. But, her parents were buried here and Ursa never let her go to cemetery hill. After breakfast, Lucy took my hand and wanted to show me something. We
excused ourselves and I followed her towards the kitchen. She opened a door that appeared to lead down
into a basement.
There was pain in my heart, and understood where she was taking me. I may have grown up here, but this was a place I had never been. I held tight to her hand and entered the big laundry room. She stood quietly and looked around. The dog bed was gone and there was no sign of anyone living down here. It was so cold and dreary; I honestly don’t know how she did it for four years. I pulled her into my chest and after a moment, we silently left the basement.

We went back to the family home to get cleaned up and rest. Some of the others who came with us stayed in the guest rooms at the pack house. I took Lucy upstairs to my old room to get some shut eye. She was the first female to ever sleep in my bed and it made Duke happy.
It was late afternoon when we arrived at the cemetery. A large crowd had already gathered including allies from other packs. My father was a great Alpha, he was loved and respected by many.
Several of the elders who knew him well spoke. His casket was lowered in the spot next to my mother, her headstone was also adorned with flowers. Howls of goodbye rang out and he was finally at rest and with my mother. His beloved mate and Luna.
We went back to the car and Max took some flowers out of the back. He handed them to Lucy. “I thought you’d like to see your parents.”
Lucy took the flowers and hugged Max before we walked over to her parents. I was surprised to see Ursa had
allowed them to be buried next to each other. Then I remembered what my father had told us about Ursa
being a chosen mate. I’m sure it was my father who had them buried together.
Lucy asked to have a few moments alone with her parents so Payton, Max and I walked back to the car to wait for her. I waited anxiously, I could feel her emotions through the mate bond, she was experiencing everything from grief to anger. This was the first time she had been allowed to visit the cemetery. She had so much grief locked away. I saw her walking towards us, hair blowing behind her in the wind and her fists
clenched.
Her eyes were swimming in tears and then I noticed her amber colored pupils were flickering. I leaned in closer and saw flames in her eyes. “Lucy, what’s going on?”
She responded with one word. “Ursa.” We obviously had some unfinished business with Ursa.
We woke the next morning in my bed at my old room. Lucy was still sleeping, so I took Duke out for a quick run before we made the long trip back home in the car. The trees in the forest at Dark Moon, were some of my favorites. I ran towards the river to my old swimming hole. There was a rustling noise behind me, and Rex stepped out. We were still able to mind link because of our family link.
“Rex is looking better.” I told Ranger.
“Thanks. How’s Lucy doing being back?” He asked with hesitation and guilt.
“She’s stronger than we give her credit for.” I said.
“Certainly stronger than I ever thought. I never deserved her.”
I wasn’t going to argue with that. He didn’t deserve her. He was lucky that she took mercy on him and saved Rex. She could destroy his entire pack if she really wanted to, but her love for my father stopped her.
“She also didn’t deserve the treatment she got in her last four years here. No one does.”

Jeserve.
“Dad always believed in you and was very disappointed. There’s not a day that he didn’t miss you or worry about you these last four years. He gave his life to give you a second chance too. Don’t let him down.”
“I’ll try not to.” He said.
“If you fail to produce an heir, I expect you to pass Dark Moon to one of mine.” I told him and he nodded.

Since my parents were buried here, it was important that a LaRue had Dark Moon.
We gathered at the pack house for breakfast before we left for home. Ranger called a pack meeting outside and Blake asked us to attend. Delta Cole appeared holding an angry looking prisoner.
“Good morning Dark Moon.” Ranger called out.
“Good morning Alpha.” They rang back in unison.
“I’ve called you here today because we have recently discovered a traitor in the pack.” Ranger said and a few pack members growled.
“Ursa Taylor, has admitted to conspiring with Alpha Jordan, to gain power with the intent of killing the LaRue Alpha’s and taking over their packs. She is also found guilty of lying to her Alpha and the abuse of Luna Lucy Michaels LaRue.”
Ursa struggled against Cole as he restrained her. “That trash doesn’t deserve to be Luna.” She growled.
I could feel Lucy’s anger flare and her eyes started burning with fire. Fear covered Ursa’s face in recognition. Shocked looks and gasps swept through the pack as they set eyes on Lucy. She radiated such great power. “Ursa Taylor, you have been sentenced to death.” Ranger called out.
Lucy walked towards Ursa who cringed back onto Cole trying to step back. “Alpha Ranger, I have a more suitable punishment for her.”
“Anything you wish Luna.” He answered back.
Lucy’s eyes returned to their calm color before she spoke…
“Throw her in the hole and leave her there to rot.”
