Chapter 9
One day, I was browsing watches at Cartier.
Grace suddenly appeared in front of me, barely hiding her smugness. “Well, well, if it isn’t Mrs. Sterling! I heard you ran away from home and moved in with some other guy?”
She deliberately raised her voice. “Your whole family’s dead and bankrupt–where’d you get the money for fancy shit like this?”
A few customers turned to stare, whispering, “Probably sugar daddy money, right?”
Grace fake–gasped behind her hand. “Summer, if you can’t afford it, I’ll pay for you!”
I ignored her, but she grabbed my wrist. “That watch looks brand new. You didn’t…”
She suddenly shrieked, “Steal it, did you?!”
The crowd started buzzing. “Looks classy but she’s a thief!”
Grace smugly pulled out a black card. “Whatever, I’ll cover it for you.” Reed’s name was embossed
on it.
A few minutes later, the sales associate came over looking embarrassed. “I’m sorry, miss, but this
card’s been frozen.”
“WHAT?!” Grace’s voice shot up an octave.
Just then, Dallas’s tall frame appeared in the doorway. “What’s going on?”
The staff immediately straightened up. “Mr. Morrison!”
Grace pointed at me, screaming, “She’s stealing!” People outside were already taking photos.
Dallas chuckled. “This is my store.”
He walked over to me. “She’s my… friend.”
“Whatever she wants, she can have.”

Someone outside whistled. “Ahaha, talk about getting owned!”
Grace’s face went from red to white as she bolted for the door, crashing straight into someone.
“Reed!” She recognized him immediately, switching to pouty victim mode. “Where have you been these past few days!”
She pointed at the store. “Your wife was in there with some random guy, totally humiliating me!” She tried to lean against him.
Reed shoved her away violently. “Get the fuck away from me, you whore!”
Grace stumbled and hit the pavement hard.
“Oh my God! Blood!” someone screamed.
Grace looked down to see a pool of bright red blood beneath her.
Reed completely ignored Grace writhing on the ground and rushed straight to me.
He looked even thinner than before, his cheekbones sharp, eyes sunken.
His voice was hoarse. “Summer, please. Come home.”
Home?” I laughed coldly. “Reed, you destroyed our home with your own hands.”
He tried to say more, but Grace wrapped herself around his leg. “Reed! Save our baby!”
turned and walked away without hesitation.
A few days later, hospital security footage was delivered to the Morrison estate.
The video showed Grace sneaking into my brother’s room and disconnecting his breathing tube.
clenched my fists.
n the Morrison estate’s storage room, Reed’s assistant was tied to a chair, beaten and bloody.
Dallas twirled a knife, his voice cold as ice. “Tell me everything Reed made you do, and I’ll let you ive.”
The assistant opened his mouth and blood poured out.

He confessed everything. My father’s accident, my brother’s “fall“-all Reed’s doing.
Just to be safe, the assistant had kept evidence. Enough to put Reed behind bars for life.
I sat in the garden for hours until Dallas came over and placed a piece of candy in my palm. I instinctively flinched.
His expression darkened. “What, you saw my interrogation methods? You scared of me now?”
“No…” I shook my head.
He suddenly took my hand. “Summer, do you remember? Years ago at a party, a little boy fell into the fountain. You jumped in to…”
I looked up at him, struggling to connect this tall, powerful man with the skinny kid from my
memory.
“Will you give me a chance?” He gently brushed the hair from my forehead.
When I didn’t answer, he said softly, “It’s okay. I can wait.”
“I know you’re confused right now. I’ll be here through all of this.”
Five months later, Dallas and I got married.
The morning before the wedding, I went alone to the cemetery.
The dew was still fresh as I gently cleaned my parents‘ photos, telling them how the company was thriving again.
Reed had someone deliver a photo from when we first met, begging to see me one last time. I threw
t in the fire.
On my wedding day, I wore a white gown, looking at my transformed reflection. At the same time,
police cars were taking Reed and Grace to prison.
Later I heard Reed ended his own life in jail.
Outside my window, the Morrison garden bloomed with camellias–Dad’s favorite flowers.
All those old wounds had finally healed with time.
