Knight takes his sweet ass time chewing his food and I know he’s doing to try and get a reaction out of me. This is a game we like to play that doesn’t necessarily have a winner or loser. If anything at the end of this, we’ll both be winning. Especially now that the aren’t here.
“I’m worried about you,” he says surprising me.
I was expecting him so say a lot of things but that wasn’t it. I don’t worry people. I stress them out, mainly Mr. Knightly, but never worry. I feel like I a good handle on this werewolf stuff thanks to Midnight.
“Me?” I take a drink of my wine. “Why?”
“You’re not happy where we are. I know you love seeing the twins happy, but we can figure something out.”
“What makes you think that I’m not happy there?”
Mr. Knightly is trying to get into our heads. Do I tell him that or wait to see where the conversation takes us. What if the old man is plotting something? I’m going to have to have a talk with him. One where it doesn’t feel like I’m being cornered.
“I’ve seen the way you are with other people. How you love making friends and talking to everyone and they love you for it. You don’t leave your grandfather’s study, Angel. You get fussy when the betas come around. I’m not the only one that’s noticed.”
“Yeah, your dad gave me a speech about recentment,” I roll my eyes. I am not about to voice my suspitions to him. They’re finally getting along. “He probably gave you one too. He needs to stop assuming things.”
“Is he assuming?” he smirks. “He worries.”
“Nathan,” I tease, his ears immediately turn bright red. “Are you defending your father’s intentions to me, right now?”
“Fuck off, Phoebe,” he laughs. “Don’t do that. I hate it when you do that.”
“I’m not recenting anything. There’s just a little bit of tension. I know Arnold worries, but it’s misplaced.”
“Then what’s the tension?” he places a couple of steak pieces onto my plate.
“How different do you think my life would have been if I had grown up there? I mean aside from being worried that my uncles and cousins might try to kill me, it would have been so cool.
“It makes me sad because it’s starting to look like my parents didn’t give a fuck about us as people. We were these little things that were created to strengthen their ranks. Abandoned and pointed in the direction of a target without us even knowing
“Perry told me how our dad trained her. How he disciplined her. I never asked about him again. That shit was crazy. Every time I see her all I want to do is hug her and she does not like being touched. She almost tipped over this vase Violetta got me for the City of Phoebs building in Magique because she was trying to escape an arm tap.”
“That sounds like Perry,” he grins. “She’s always been like that. I don’t know what your life or ours would have been if you had been raised there. You’ve taught me that thinking about what could have been or what was is kind of pointless.”
“Right, that’s what I told your dad. I just thought it would be cool and I don’t know how to talk to people I’m kind of scared of. We’ve been met with nothing but hostility. I can smell it. The tart scent that comes off them when they hate us. I sometimes get it off Allison.
“I have a big mouth and I’d hate to be the reason why Aizen can’t stay. He loves it there. I’ve never seen him so happy. He’s always had to share everything with Ayrie until now. This is his and want him to have it.”
“You know, just because you want that doesn’t mean that you can’t be a part of it the same way he is. I’d love nothing more than to try to be there for him on this path, but I have a lot to work on at the moment. I’m not saying you don’t, but you’re definitely closer to this.

Angel. I don’t think Arnold is a good role model and Elliot is figuring out how he’s going to run the city. He didn’t have the training others alphas do and it’s a lot to ask.”
“You think I’d make a good Alpha?” I laugh.
“I know you’re a good alpha.” he smiles. “You’re way stronger than an average one. “Most of it was already done. I just tweeked it,” I shrug. “I get what you’re saying. It’s just not going to be easy for me. My instincts are wired to survive. To avoid conflict and ensure my safety as well as yours and the twins. Just because people do what I want them to do doesn’t mean I can trust them. My

“You’re making up excuses,” he laughs. “It’s not the first time I’ve seen you do it. I know this is way outside your comfortzone, Angel, but if you stayed in that zone you would probably still be a glorified mermaid on instagram not living up to your potential.”
“Stop pointing out my insecurities. I don’t do that to you.”
“You do it all the time. You tease the fuck out of me when I least expect it,” he laughs. “You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to. We can think of something else. Maybe bring in a city alpha that works the pack financials as an official.”
“And risk him trying to kill my son. Fuck that.” I scoff.
“You are not making this shit easy for me, Phoebe,” he growls playfully. “We can get a Lycan alpha to come in. We have options. Just think about it. We have time. Aizen is only starting his training here. We usually pick what path we want to take our pack in during academia. He has two years before that starts. All we’re doing is providing protection and offering what services we can as parents to the heir of the pack.”
