Chapter 5
“You’ve completely lost your mind!” Victoria screamed at me, furious as she lunged forward, trying to headbutt me.
She yelled, “Patrick is still your husband! Do you think you’ll have an easy life if he gets in trouble? Besides, you’re alive and well now. What’s the big deal with letting us be together? It’s not like you’re dying!”
On the other end, Thomas spoke up nervously, his voice shaking, “What are you two talking about?”

Victoria suddenly realized she had said too much and shut her mouth immediately, though she kept struggling violently. Unexpectedly, she managed to hit me hard, knocking me
sideways and causing me to disconnect the call accidentally.
After confirming that my phone had gone silent, she looked at me smugly while breathing heavily. “Let’s see how you’ll talk your way out of this now.”
A few moments later, hurried footsteps echoed down the hall, followed by Patrick anxiously shouting Victoria’s name. Victoria’s lips curled upward as she dramatically broke free from my grip and fell heavily onto the floor.
Before I could react, Patrick stormed through the hospital room door, panic written all over his face. “Vicky!”
He immediately helped Victoria up from the floor.
She was holding her belly and crying pitifully, and Patrick turned toward me, screaming, “Esme, how can you be so heartless? You knew she was pregnant, yet you pushed her anyway!”
Victoria sobbed loudly in Patrick’s arms. “I only wanted to check on her for your sake, but she called me a homewrecker and said my baby was illegitimate! She even tried to push me to cause a miscarriage! Esme, what have I ever done to you that you’d want to destroy me like this?”

She kept going, pretending innocence. “We’ve always told you we’re just friends, but you never believed us. You’re going way too far!”
Patrick comforted her gently, helped her sit on the bed, then stormed over to me and slapped me hard across the face. He hissed, “Consider that slap as payback for what you’ve done to Vicky.”
I had just regained consciousness recently, and after struggling with Victoria earlier, my body was extremely weak. His slap knocked me down onto the bed, my head spinning
violently.
Patrick frowned at me suspiciously. “Stop pretending to be weak. Do you think I’ll fall for your act? You should feel lucky to be alive. It’s all thanks to Vicky praying for your safety!
“She’s done so much! Why can’t you just let her go already? If it weren’t for you, she
wouldn’t have had to come back from overseas in the first place. You may have given her a
lifebuoy, but it doesn’t make you a hero. It’s what you should’ve done anyway!”
The commotion in our room was so loud that doctors and nurses rushed inside to check on
- me.
One of the nurses pushed Patrick aside, prompting him to snap angrily. “Why did you push me? I’m just disciplining my wife!”
A nurse yelled back at him, “Get out! We need to make sure the patient is okay!”
However, Patrick refused to budge, crossing his arms and watching closely as the medical staff checked my condition. After a brief examination confirmed that I was stable, they finally breathed a sigh of relief.
The nurse turned and glared at Patrick. “So you’re the heroic deputy rescue chief who sobbed for the cameras yesterday about your dead wife? What kind of sick bastard does that?!
“And as for that woman, I saw her walking in here perfectly fine. Do you really think the patient has enough strength to push her?”

Patrick looked guilty for a brief second but quickly covered it up with anger, raising his
voice in defense. “That’s nonsense! Vicky would never frame
anyone!”
