Donald, ever sharp–eyed, immediately noticed the red mark on her face.
Jennifer said lightly, “A mom brought her kid to see the doctor, and the kid accidentally scratched my face.”
“Let me help you take care of that scratch first,” Donald offered.
“No need. It doesn’t even hurt. Your parents are waiting,” Jennifer insisted. She firmly hooked her arm through his and told him to deal with it after
dinner.
They had barely sat down when Jonathan walked in, too.
Hayden, sitting at the head of the table, shot Jonathan a glare. “Honestly, I don’t even want to see you. No wife, no kids, always out and about. How long has it been since you came home?”
Irene quickly chimed in, “Jonathan’s busy with work. That’s better than just loafing around, right?”
While Irene was talking, Jonathan had already walked over to Hayden, put a hand on his shoulder, and said he’d brought some good wine to help him
cool off.
Hayden pushed him away. “Go on, get out of here. I don’t want you leaning on me. Look at Donald–he’s about to get married. And you? You’ve got nothing. You’re my eldest grandson, for heaven’s sake.”
Jonathan glanced over at Donald and Jennifer. After he sat down, he asked Donald, “So, you’re getting married?”
“Yeah. We’re planning to get engaged next month,” Donald replied.
Jonathan nodded. “Oh really? That’s great.”
Jonathan had no idea about the engagement. He wasn’t sure if Teresa knew either. If the engagement was set for next month, that was coming up fast.
Donald said, “Jonathan, stay in Nareigh a few more days. You have to be here when Jennifer and get engaged.”
“Alright,” Jonathan replied, pouring himself a drink and clinking glasses with Donald.
Irene tugged on Jonathan’s sleeve, signaling for him to take it easy and not drink too much.
Hayden frowned, “We’re all family here. Let him drink if he wants. What’s there to worry about?”
Irene pressed her lips together. It wasn’t just about the drinking–she wanted to talk to Jonathan later, and she didn’t want him drinking on an empty stomach. She was also worried about his stomach acting up.”
Werner raised his glass to Jonathan and said, “Donald just bought an Audi A7. You saw it, right? I thought he’d go for the AS. It’s not like he can’t afford
it.”
Jonathan glanced over at Donald. The truth was that Donald had borrowed the money for the car from him, but he didn’t say anything.
“The A7’s great. Young people like something stylish. I’m getting old. Driving an A8 would just make me look even older,” Jonathan said.
Werner chuckled, “Come on, you’re only four years older than Donald. Thirty isn’t old–it’s the best time of your life! Next time, bring your girlfriend home, alright? Stop dragging your feet. It’s time to move on.”
“You’re right. Time to move on,” Jonathan said, clinking glasses with Werner and taking a drink.
On the other side, Donald sat in silence, poured hirgself another drink, and downed it, lost in thought.

As the family dinner wrapped up, Werner helped Hayden up, yet Hayden turned to Jennifer.
He said, “Hannah, next time, bring Teresa over for dinner, will you? Just tell her I miss her. Even if she’s not my granddaughter–in–law anymore, can list
want to see her?
“You and Donald are getting married soon, so we’re all family now. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about.”
Irene let out a quiet, sarcastic laugh. If Hayden and Jonathan weren’t right there, she definitely would’ve said something. ‘Bring Teresa? As if things weren’t messy enough already,‘ she thought.
After Hayden left, Jonathan turned to Irene, who was still grumbling to herself. “Let’s go,” he said.
Once they got in the car, Irene finally asked, “You’re not drunk, are you? I need to talk to you about something.”
