Chapter 5
Considering my physical condition, the car moved at a steady pace.
But Tobias Johnson’s presence made the atmosphere in the car drop to freezing point.
His gaze swept over my injured forehead, sprained ankle, and repeatedly bandaged hands.
After a long silence, he finally spoke.
“Emily, did the White family deliberately send me damaged goods to insult me?”
“Do you even realize…. if I had arrived a moment later, you might not even be alive right now?
I let out a bitter laugh.
Too bad the unfinished scarf had been left behind at the White family’s house.
And with the state I was in now, I had nothing left that could possibly please Tobias Johnson.
“It’s too late to regret it now. The agreement is already in effect,” I said, my tone faint.
“Besides, it won’t be long before Sunny Mason becomes Mrs. Kingston. Surely the Young Master of the Johnson family wouldn’t go after another man’s wife?”
Tobias let out a cold snort.
“Her? Worthy of being Mrs. Kingston? A wild chicken from who–knows–where, putting on a few feathers and thinking she’s a phoenix.”
“I just didn’t expect the White family to fall so far. No wonder the once–proud Miss White would rather endure my humiliation just to leave her family.”
Pride? What pride did I still have?
After my father’s death, the White family plummeted into decline.
My mother, who had spent her life shopping and socializing, was completely helpless in the face of such upheaval. She spent her days clutching my father’s photo, crying incessantly, unable to do anything else.
Aiden swore he would take responsibility for supporting the White family.
He and Stephen ventured into investments but couldn’t lower themselves to listen to experienced employees‘
advice. They failed repeatedly, almost depleting all of the family’s savings.
The people who once envied me and those who were friendly with the White family either began to distance themselves or took the opportunity to kick us while we were down.
I could accept the fall from heaven to hell as long as our family stayed united. There would always be a chance for a

But every time I offered suggestions, Sunny Mason was the first to oppose them.
“How could we let Mom live in a small house in the suburbs? That would make her the laughingstock of the socialite circle! Emily, you’re so unfilial.”
“Aiden and Stephen are doing their best. How will we know if it works unless they try? Emily, it’s not even your money they’re spending–what are you upset about? Or are you hoping to use that money to keep buying luxury goods?”
“A starving camel is still bigger than a horse. Even if the White family isn’t what it used to be, we have to maintain appearances. We can’t let others look down on us!”
With these sweet words, she deceived everyone and gained their trust.
She turned me, the biological daughter of the White family, the rightful eldest daughter, into an outcast.
The bonds of blood and family, the love of childhood sweethearts–all were no match for Sunny Mason’s few manipulative words.
They gave me life and raised me for over twenty years.
I won’t hold a grudge for what they’ve done to me, and I’ve sold myself to pay off the White family’s debts.
For the debt of giving me life and raising me, I owe them nothing now.
“Tobias, I’d like to ask you for a favor,” I said.
Tobias Johnson didn’t bother to look at me, replying with a faint tone, “What? Do you want me to stand up for you? I
don’t think so…”
“I’ll follow your orders without complaint for these three years. But when the agreement ends, I want to go to France to study. I hope you won’t tell anyone where I am–especially them.”
Tobias propped his head on his hand, a smirk playing on his lips as he studied me for a moment.
“You don’t seem to be in a position to make requests.”
“Fine. Considering how pitiful you are right now, I’ll show some mercy.”
“But there’s one thing you seem to have forgotten. The agreement’s deadline was midnight, which means that after midnight, you’re mine.”
“The White family dared to hurt someone who belongs to me. Shouldn’t I go settle the score?”
As he spoke, he fastened the pink diamond necklace worth millions around my neck.
With a crisp click, it felt as though some mysterious contract had been sealed between us.

I looked up at Tobias, but his gaze had already shifted to the window.
“Emily, just wait and see. I’ll make sure the whole world knows that only I can touch what’s mine
