After my parents were murdered, I begged my fiancé for help. However, what I got was indifference and his turning around to marry his first love. 

At my lowest point, his police brother, Nathan, proposed to me at the funeral, promising to protect me for a whole life and would help me find out the murderer. 

I agreeed without hesitation. But the case eventually went cold. 

Overwhelmed by grief, Nathan handled my parents‘ funeral arrangements and brought me to live with his family. 

I thought he was my soulmate, until five years of marriage later, I overheard what he said to his friends. 

“Nathan, Erin was clearly the only suspect in the Blake family murders. Why did you abandon the investigation? How can you call yourself a police? You’re letting Sophie live under the same roof as her parents‘ killer. Have you thought about what happens when she finds out?” 

“Erin is innocent. She was just accidentally at the Blakes‘ house when it happened. The murders have nothing to do 

with her. I believe her.” 

“I’ve failed my badge, but I haven’t failed my heart. Even if she didn’t choose me, as long as she’s happy, I’ll do anything for her.” 

Just on the other side of the door, Nathan stared at our wedding photo on the wall, his voice filled with the regret of unrequited love. “Since Erin didn’t choose me, all I can do is clear all obstacles for her so she has nothing to worry about. As for Sophie… I’ll keep an eye on her, make sure she never discovers the truth.” 

His colleague looked disappointed and uncomfortable. “You’ve solved countless cases over eight years, earned so many commendations. Why throw it all away for Erin? She doesn’t even love you! Her presence at the Blakes‘ house that day was no coincidence! If anyone finds out about this, you’ll lose more than your job. Your reputation will be destroyed, and you might even go to prison. Have you lost your mind?” 

Nathan smiled faintly, unconcerned. “Lost my mind? Maybe. Love isn’t rational. The case is closed now. Let’s not bring it up again.” 

“Then what about Sophie? You married her and forced her to face her parents‘ killer every day. Have you thought about what that does to her? She loves you so much-” 

Before he could finish, Nathan’s expression hardened. “Enough! I’ve told you, Erin is not the killer. If someone has to pay for this, I’ll give my life for it!” 

“I don’t understand you. All the evidence and motive point to her, yet you insist… Never mind. If you think this is 

fine, then continue.” 

Footsteps approaching, I fled back to our bedroom.

Nathan stumbled into our room, cradled my face, and kissed my forehead. 

His eyes, clouded with alcohol, were full of concern. “Why are you standing by the door?” 

“Nothing. I was just bringing you some soup for your hangover, but I spilled it.” 

“Let the housekeeper handle that. You’ve been too tired lately. Rest well, otherwise I’ll worry.” 

He kissed my lips again, his touch gentle and loving, just like always. But I could no longer feel his warmth. 

Could someone really go this far for another person? 

As I closed my eyes, tears rolled down my cheeks. 

I helped him to bed and tucked him in. The alcohol quickly pulled him into sleep. 

I sat beside the bed and took his phone. 

The password was Erin’s birthday. After entering it, I accessed a hidden system.

His favoritism and protection were unmistakable, stinging my heart deeply. 

He had always been principled and determined in his investigations. These qualities had made me fall hopelessly in love with him. But I never imagined he would abandon all his principles for Erin.

I opened it to find Erin’s smiling face everywhere–ten thousand photos documenting her life over the past five years since her marriage.
