Chapter 7
I froze, nails digging deep into my palms. “What did you just say?”
“Your mother is alive, Liv. I found her.”
Mom was… alive?
“Come on, take my hand. I’ll take you to her right now.”
He stepped forward, palm up, waiting.
Despite everything, I placed my hand in his.
Jake’s fingers clamped around mine with bruising force before yanking me against his chest.
His arms locked around my waist like steel bands, his breathing ragged and uneven.
“She’s lucid now,” he murmured, his warm breath tickling my ear. “Last month she asked about you–wanted to know if you were happy.”
I bit my lip until I tasted blood.
“Let’s go see her, okay?”
He pressed his lips to my trembling eyelashes, his voice honey–sweet.
Then his fingertips brushed the nape of my neck–a gesture that felt both soothing and threatening.
Jake chuckled softly, his lips grazing my earlobe as he whispered:
“But Liv… try to run again, and you’ll never see her. Ever.”
The moment I saw my mother, I broke down completely.
She was skeletal, her gaze unfocused and distant.
She didn’t recognize me, but when she heard my sobs, something instinctual seemed to kick in. She slowly lifted her frail hand and stroked my hair.

“Don’t cry, Olivia,” she whispered. “Don’t cry, baby girl.”
I knelt by her bed, crying until I could barely breathe.
“Can she recover?” I asked later.
Jake was quiet for a moment, his voice low and matter–of–fact: “Maybe. Maybe not.”
After my mother fell asleep, I sat numbly on a bench in the hallway, my fingers ice–cold.
‘Do you really have to do this to me?”
ake stood in front of me, leaning down with his hands on the armrests, caging me in.
looked up at him, my eyes burning with unshed tears.
‘Why won’t you let me go? I have no evidence against you–you’ve made sure of that. What are you
so afraid of?”
He suddenly smiled, his thumb gently caressing my swollen eyelid.
‘Baby, don’t you get it yet?” Jake leaned in closer until our noses almost touched. “I would rather die han let you go.”
Gazing his eyes, I pulled out the surgical scalpel I’d hidden and straight plunged it into his chest.
His body tensed slightly, but he just laughed softly.
Blood dripped down the handle onto my hand, sticky and burning hot.
Through labored breaths, he grabbed my hand and pushed the blade deeper. “Go ahead, Liv. This is
how you kill me.”
The sickening sound of the blade sinking completely in made me tremble uncontrollably.
ake guided my hand to twist the scalpel, sweat beading on his forehead from the pain, yet still smiling.
I screamed and let go, stumbling backward.
‘Why stop now? Hmm?” he rasped.

Chapter 7
“You’re insane! You’re absolutely fucking insane!”
I pulled at my hair, tears blurring my vision.
He slammed me against the wall, his bloodstained fingertips tracing my lips.
“Liv, you can’t kill me. I know you still love me.”
“You hate yourself, not me. You hate that you believed me, that you fell for me… that even knowing
the truth, you still can’t kill me.”
Hot droplets hit my face–impossible to tell whose tears they were.
Jake suddenly coughed violently but stubbornly continued.
“That year when you refused the arranged marriage, it was supposed to be with my older brother.
In my father’s plan, if not him, someone else would have targeted Maxwell Industries.”
“I was the lucky one–you chose the broke nobody, not the billionaire heir.”
Jake slowly sank to his knees.
Blood continued seeping from the chest wound, but he seemed oblivious to it. He just gazed up at me, his expression devastated.
“Liv, no one wishes I was just Chris more than I do.” His smile was more heartbreaking than tears. “We would’ve been so much happier. Hell–bent on revenge, I never thought I’d actually fall for you. That was the one curveball I never saw coming.”
His voice broke, shoulders shaking violently.
“That day, I didn’t want to hand over those documents. I just wanted to marry you.”
“But Liv…”
Jake suddenly looked up, his bloodshot eyes swimming with shattered tears.
“It wasn’t my call anymore. When I’m powerful enough, I’ll avenge you. I’ll make Alexander pay until he begs for death.”
Without warning, he bowed his head to the ground.
