Chapter 82
“Hey.” I sighed as I answered the call. “What are you doing calling so early?”
“I wanted to catch you before you went to school.” Aiden replied, the richness of his voice soothing my frayed nerves instantly
“Yeah about that…” I mumbled. “I’m not going in.”
“Everything okay?”
“Noah’s suspension was reversed.” I replied. “He’s back in school.”
Aiden cursed softly before a heavy silence filled the line. I could imagine him trying to work out what to do and how to do it. I waited for him to say something, biting the skin of my
bottom lip until a coppery tang touched the tip of my tongue.
“I’m coming back.” He finally said, saying exactly what I expected him to say.
“No, don’t” I countered. “That’s what he wants, Aiden. He wants you to do something so he can use it against you. Just like he did with Kyle.”
“Jesus, El. I don’t like that you’re alone and he is just walking around like a free person.” I couldn’t see Aiden but I could tell he was clenching his fists, his eyes burning with anger. “Please tell me the police are still going to do something.”
I couldn’t bring myself to say anything, my throat feeling like it was closing up. Even if I wanted to say something I couldn’t as I fought against the burning in my eyes and the feeling like if I dared to open my mouth, I would burst into tears. My silence said it all though and Aiden interpreted it perfectly.
“Fuck…” He growled and I thought I heard something bang in the background.
“I’m going to drop my classes.” I quickly spoke up before he started going on about me being alone and him coming back. “Well, I want to see if I can finish them online but if not, I’ll drop them. I don’t need them anyway. If I’m not in school then he has less chance of getting to me,
right?”
“I
guess, but I don’t like the idea of you being alone right now.” He muttered.
“Tammy is coming over tonight and you’ll be back in a couple of days, right?” I pointed out to
him.

“Yeah. Okay. But you contact me if that fucker tries anything.” O
“I will, I promise.” I agreed, well aware I was practically breaking that promise by not telling Aiden what happened yesterday. If I did though, he’d just come straight back and I wasn’t ready for that drama yet. “I’d better go, I want to catch the school administrator before school
starts.
“Okay.” Aiden agreed. “I’ll give you a call tonight.”
We said our goodbyes even though I could tell Aiden was reluctant to let me go. I reminded him we’d talk that evening and I reminded myself he was only going to be gone for a few days. He’d be back before I knew it and hopefully by then, I’d be out of school and Noah wouldn’t be able to get to me without doing something stupid which would land him in hot water. Noah wouldn’t be stupid enough to turn up at my house, not after everything that has already happened. Right?
Either way, Noah was my problem to deal with and I wasn’t going to let anyone else be hurt or get into trouble because of me.
