Chapter 7

Over the next few days, Stella’s lies spread through our family and friends like wildfire.

She sobbed to Grandma:

‘Nana, Riley would literally choke me in the middle of the night! She said she wanted to watch me die.”

She broke down to our homeroom teacher, Ms. Peterson:

‘She threatened to push me down the stairs if I ever snitched on her at school!”

She even had a total meltdown in front of the neighbors:

‘Riley kept saying I was worthless, that Mom and Dad would just throw me away when they got sick of me.”

Every lie sounded so damn convincing, every tear looked totally real.

And I was stuck just floating here, watching her trash my reputation, totally helpless.

drifted home and found Mom on the couch, clutching my diary, looking completely wrecked.

‘Babe,” she called out when Dad walked in, “do you think Stella’s telling the truth? Was Riley actually…

bullying her this whole time?”

Dad slumped into the couch, hands over his face.

‘Honestly? I have no clue what to think anymore. I’ve been going over everything, and Riley did seem to always mess up at the worst times…”

‘Like, she’d make noise right when Stella was having a breakdown, always seemed to stir up drama when

Stella needed peace and quiet.”

I figured it was just bad timing, but now… maybe she was doing it on purpose?”

Mom shook her head. “No way. Riley was the sweetest kid ever. She adored Stella…”

‘But those pills Stella found, and the sleeping meds the doctors confirmed-you can’t fake that stuff.”

Dad sounded totally lost.

Just then, Stella walked in, eyes all red and puffy.

“Mom, Dad… should I not have said anything? Did I get Riley in trouble?”

She looked so innocent, so guilty-nothing like someone who was lying through her teeth.

Mom immediately pulled her into a hug. “No, sweetheart, you did the right thing. If Riley really did those things, we needed to know.”

“But…” Stella sniffled into Mom’s shoulder, “I still miss her. Even though she was mean to me, she could be

nice sometimes too.”

“Like that time I had a really bad fever and she stayed up all night taking care of me.”

“Maybe she did love me deep down, but her mental issues made her… twisted.”

Hearing this, Mom and Dad were even more convinced Stella was telling the truth.

Only someone who’d really been hurt would have such complicated feelings-love mixed with hate, fear mixed with longing.

I watched my sister’s Oscar-worthy performance, feeling colder than I’d ever felt before.

The real psychological problem in this house was never her depression.

It was her sick, twisted mind.

She’d been lying this whole time, manipulating everyone, soaking up all the attention and sympathy.

And me? I was just collateral damage in her twisted game.
