Chapter 6

In the hospital hallway, Stella Williams sat in a wheelchair, still pale but with a terrifying clarity in her eyes.

A nurse wheeled her into the interview room while the officer studied this seemingly fragile girl.

‘Stella, can you repeat what you just told the nurse?”

Stella kept her head down, absently fingering the pill bottle around her neck.

‘I don’t know what to say.” Her voice was soft, with a practiced tremor.

‘You said your sister Riley threatened you?”

‘Yes.” Stella looked up, a flash of cunning I’d never seen before flickering in her eyes.

‘She always hated that I was sick, hated that Mom and Dad cared about me. She said if she got the chance, she’d make me disappear.”

The officer frowned. “But from what we understand, your sister always looked out for your emotional state, even gave up a lot of her own interests.”

That was all fake!” Stella suddenly got worked up.

She was just acting in front of Mom and Dad! When we were alone, she’d mess with me on purpose, launting her grades, using those gross paint fumes to make me sick!”

She even snuck stuff into my medication to make my condition worse!”

floated nearby, watching my sister’s twisted expression, feeling a bone-deep chill.

he was turning everything completely upside down.

The officer narrowed his eyes.

Stella Williams, you need to understand that every word you say has consequences. Your sister is dead. Are you really going to keep lying about her?”

Tears instantly flooded Stella’s eyes.

She sobbed as she spoke: “Officer, I know it’s wrong to say bad things about dead people, but I was so scared

of her.”

‘I kept thinking, if I told Mom and Dad the truth, would Riley actually kill me?”

“But now that she’s dead, I can finally speak up.”

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small bottle.

“These are vitamins Riley gave me. She said they’d help me feel better. But I secretly had them tested-there are sleeping pills mixed in.”

The officer took the bottle, his expression growing more serious.

Just then, Dad was brought into the room.

“Mr. Williams, your daughter just made some statements about your older daughter. I need to verify a few things with you.”

Dad glanced at Stella, who immediately threw herself into his arms, crying:

“Daddy, I’m so scared. Riley, she…”

“What? Stella, what are you talking about?” Dad held his younger daughter tight, confusion and worry filling

his eyes.

“Daddy, Riley was actually bullying me this whole time. She acted nice on the surface, but actually she just

wanted me dead!”

Dad’s face went white. “That’s impossible. Riley loved you so much…”

“She was faking it!” Stella cried harder. “When you weren’t around, she’d pinch me, hit me, force me to take

weird pills!”

‘She said if I told you guys, she’d really kill me!”

Dad looked down at his fragile daughter, remembering the image of Riley lying in that pool of blood, and

started to waver.

Had Riley really been hurting Stella all along?

Had they been blaming Stella all the time when Riley was the REAL abuser?
