Chapter10
The phone rang a few times, but no one answered.
He called several more times, and it was the same.
Adrian, burning with rage, was just about to call again when he received a message from Martin:
[Wedding night. Do not disturb.]
To hell with the wedding night!
Adrian cursed out loud, couldn’t hold back anymore, grabbed his car keys, and rushed out.
Some instinct warned him–if he missed this night, if the deal was sealed, then everything would really be
over.
He never thought that only at this moment would he finally realize–he couldn’t live without Eveline.
As for everything else…
Once he got back, he’d have plenty of time to think and explain.
Eveline loved him deeply, of course she would believe his explanation.
Once he’d thought it all through, he’d definitely give her a proper, real wedding.
Adrian finally made up his mind, floored the accelerator, and sped off.
At the same time, in the bridal suite, Eveline had been physically and mentally exhausted these days, and
after showering, she had fallen fast asleep.
Martin finished changing the bandages on her wounds, then unconsciously reached out to touch the
hideous old scar on her leg.
His eyes were full of pain–and a trace of relief.
Fortunately, Adrian had given him the chance.
So…
He would never allow her to go back to Adrian.
A soft kiss landed on her forehead.
Eveline stirred in her sleep, then instinctively nestled her head against his chest.

Martin’s lips curved slightly.
Afraid Adrian would disturb their rest, he silenced both their phones, then turned off the lights and held
the girl in his arms as they slept.
Midnight.
After driving for two hours, Adrian finally arrived at the Whitmore estate.
His father was still working in the study; his mother was heading upstairs with a glass of warm milk on a
tray.
Seeing Adrian suddenly return so late, she looked surprised.
“Adrian, it’s so late. What’s going on?”
“Oh right, your uncle’s wedding. Why didn’t you…”
“Mom, today’s wedding was supposed to be mine and Eveline’s!”
Before she could finish, Adrian cut her off anxiously.
But just as he was about to continue, the words caught in his throat.
How could he explain?
Explain that he’d lied to Eveline for seven years in a secret relationship because his father disapproved of
the woman he truly loved?
Or that, on the day of their wedding, he had faked his death to escape the marriage, giving Martin the
perfect chance to step in?
No matter what he said, he was in the wrong.
Adrian grew more frustrated. After a long silence, he finally squeezed out one sentence:
“…Anyway, Eveline is my girlfriend.”
His mother froze, then reached out to feel his forehead.
“No fever, why are you talking nonsense?”
“I’d actually hoped you and Eveline would get together… but you love Maria. I know that.”
Adrian opened his mouth, but couldn’t say anything.

He wanted to show some evidence, but when he opened his photo gallery, he realized–he and Eveline
barely had any pictures together.
The most recent one was from a birthday banquet years ago.
As for their chat history, he’d deleted it all long ago, afraid Maria would get jealous.
Adrian suddenly panicked.
He quickly tried to video call Eveline, hoping she could confirm that their seven–year relationship was real.
But the video wouldn’t go through.
A red exclamation mark appeared. Adrian stared in disbelief, his body swaying.
Eveline had blocked him.
Looks like… she must’ve found something out.
It must be Martin!
Adrian’s expression twisted with rage. Clinging to a final shred of hope, he called Walter again.
When the call connected, he let out a sigh of relief and hurriedly asked,
“Walter, tell me, isn’t Eveline my girlfriend?”
“…Are you drunk?”
Walter paused, then instantly guessed what was going on, but chose to play dumb, using the chance to
lecture Adrian:
“No matter what, she’s your aunt now. Don’t do anything stupid.”
Aunt…
Adrian felt like a bucket of ice water had been poured over his head–he was cold from head to toe.
And Walter was right.
She was his aunt now.
And he was the one who had pushed her into someone else’s arms.
Who could he blame now?

Ignoring his mother’s calls behind him, Adrian turned and left in defeat.
But he didn’t go to Maria.
Instead, he returned to the villa he had once shared with Eveline.
The house was pitch dark.
He turned on the lights, went upstairs, walked into the bedroom, and collapsed onto the bed.
Everything was still in its place.
And yet–there wasn’t a trace of her anywhere.
A bitter ache rose in Adrian’s chest as he finally realized–too late–just how much of an asshole he’d
been.
He didn’t know what exactly had happened at the wedding.
But when he didn’t show up, she must have been devastated.
People must have talked. Judged her.
And that’s why she believed Martin.
Yes.
Adrian suddenly bolted upright, a flicker of hope sparking in his chest.
If things were the way he imagined, then Eveline had only married Martin out of desperation.
She must have believed Martin’s lies.
It had all happened in the heat of the moment.
Which meant–he still had a chance.
A chance to fix what was broken to win her back.
