He could come up with countless excuses–traffic, an unexpected delay. No one would be the wiser.
As long as he showed up at the wedding, the rest of the plan would naturally be canceled. No one would
ever know he had tried to run away.
But deep down… was he truly willing?
Adrian’s hands clenched and relaxed on the steering wheel, again and again. In the end, his love for Maria
outweighed the guilt he felt toward Eveline.
Yes, he had wronged Eveline. But compared to her, he couldn’t bear to hurt Maria–the woman who had
waited for him for so many years.
With that thought, Adrian made up his mind, deliberately ignoring the ring lying beneath the passenger
seat.
It was just a ring, one that had never fit her finger.
If it had accidentally fallen, so be it–it wasn’t important.
Finally convincing himself, he leaned back in his seat, and closed his eyes to rest.
Five hours later, the “good news” arrived.
The plane had “accidentally” crashed shortly after entering the desert.
His plan had succeeded.
And yet… he didn’t feel the joy he had imagined.
Elsewhere, at the wedding venue.
Per Adrian’s request, a few of his close friends still attended the wedding.
No place cards, no guest book–just folding chairs hastily arranged. It was clearly a rushed event.
Sitting at a round table, watching the bride’s parents busying about from afar, someone finally whispered:
“Adrian’s got guts. Didn’t even tell his parents. All this for some social climber?”
“You have no idea. That woman tried to sleep with my dad back in the day… Who knows what kind of
potion she fed Adrian. He’s been hooked on her for years.”
“Shh. Keep your voice down. Don’t let the ‘widower‘ catch you badmouthing his dear Maria.”

Walter, the red–haired man in a bright plaid suit, chuckled flamboyantly, though there was a rare trace of
sympathy in his voice.
“Poor Eveline. Even a guy like me can’t help but feel sorry for her.”
“Walter, didn’t you say you had a plan? Where is it?”
“Relax. Give it five more minutes.”
He took a slow sip of champagne, checked his watch, and smiled confidently.
“Either Adrian suddenly has a change of heart and comes running back–or… I paid ten grand for a
professional actor to stand by outside. No welcome signs, no guest list. No one will know who the groom
was supposed to be.”
The group was stunned speechless.
Before they could respond, the entrance music began to play.
Everyone held their breath as the grand doors were pulled open.
A couple entered the venue, hand in hand.
The bride wore a simple gown, her face calm, her beauty breathtaking. She made no attempt to hide the
scars on her leg.
The man beside her was tall, wearing a matching minimalist suit. At first glance, he even bore a
resemblance to Adrian.
But his aura and presence were completely different.
The table of friends stared, dumbfounded–until someone finally cursed under their breath.
The groom wasn’t Adrian, but his uncle–Martin.
Someone must’ve tried calling Adrian, but as expected, the call couldn’t go through.
“Thank you all for taking time out of your busy lives to attend the wedding of my beloved child and my outstanding younger brother…”
Adrian’s grandfather had long passed, so it was his father who stood in as host and gave a heartfelt
speech, moving most of the guests to tears.
Except for the group at that one table.

They continued trying to reach Adrian, to no avail.
Just then, Eveline–now dressed in a wine–red gown for the toasts–walked toward them.
The group hurriedly tucked away their phones, a little sheepish.
But Eveline approached with grace and a warm smile.
“Thank you all for coming. And thank you for standing up for me the other day.”
She looked at Walter and added, “And Lin, thank you for hiring the ‘groom.’ I appreciate the thought.”
Everyone froze.
It was Walter who stood first, raising his glass with a faint smile.
“Congratulations on your marriage.”
And somehow, in that moment, he had a gut feeling–Adrian was going to regret this.
The others quickly followed suit, raising their glasses one after another.
No more words were needed.
From a short distance away, Martin stepped forward, naturally taking Eveline’s hand and nodding politely
to the group.
he look in his eyes said it all.
Seeing that, none of them tried to contact Adrian again.
This outcome… maybe it was the best for everyone.
The wedding ended peacefully.
After bidding farewell to the guests, Eveline changed out of her gown and strolled with Martin under the
early spring sunset.
The rain had passed. It was still a bit chilly, and she wore Martin’s jacket draped over her shoulders. Her
Bluetooth earpiece played Relief.
As the lyrics reached “You’re free to leave, and I’m free to live well,” a breaking news alert lit up her phone
-A private jet had crashed in the desert.
Judging by the time, it must’ve been the one Adrian had chartered.

For a long moment, Eveline just stared at the screen. Then slowly… she exhaled.
At last, she and Adrian were both free.
At the same moment, in another part of the city, Adrian shivered.
Feeling uneasy, he finally turned his phone back on.
As soon as it powered up, missed calls and notifications flooded in.
Among them–two news alerts.
One read about the crash.
The other made his eyes widen in disbelief-“Outdoor Brand CEO Eveline Marries Today. Groom’s Identity Unknown But Strikingly Handsome.”
