Chapter 7
Torrential rain, roaring, amnesia, cancer–all the classic
elements were there.
I glanced at my watch. Three in the morning, and they were putting on a Korean drama right at my doorstep: “Look, it’s really late. If you two want to have your romantic moment, could you not do it in front of my house and disturb my sleep?”
Jolene stared at me coldly: “Nathaniel is in this condition, and all you can think about is sleep! You don’t love him at all!”
“If you loved him, how could you bear to watch him abandon his dignity for you?”
“If you loved him, how could you bear to watch him collapse in the pouring rain?”

“If you loved him, how could you bear to keep pretending to have amnesia and torturing him?”
Great, now she’s using parallel structure.
I was speechless. A crazy man and a crazy woman—a perfect match.
Nathaniel fell silent too. After a long moment, he struggled to his feet, stood directly in front of me, staring intently, then suddenly

dropped to his knees and crawled forward two steps, grabbing the hem of my clothes.
“Mae, have you really forgotten me? Really, not even a tiny bit, not even the smallest memory left?”
I looked down at the man kneeling before me. His eyes held pain and hope, along with a trace of pleading.
“I really don’t remember.” I helplessly repeated the words I’d said countless times.
“Please, don’t lie to me.” He looked disheveled, with mud and water streaking his cheeks.
“I’m really not lying to you.“.
“Fine.” A drop of bright red bloody tear slid from the corner of his eye. “Fine.”
Then he stood up, turning his back to me, his voice hoarse and exhausted: “Mae, I’m tired. All this time, I’ve been trying to express my apologies and sincerity to you, but you’ve turned a blind eye to everything.”
“The amnesia potion’s effects wore off long ago. You’re ignoring my difficulties and predicament, unreasonably venting your dissatisfaction on me and trampling on my dignity.”

“Playing with me—is it fun? You’ve truly broken my heart.”

With that, he left with Jolene’s support. I opened my mouth to speak. Wait, dude, you’re crying bloody tears—are you sure you’re okay? Also, I can hear the ambulance coming. Shouldn’t you pay the medical bills before leaving?
Nathaniel finally disappeared. After that incident, he never showed up again.
I was also preparing to pack my bags and go teach in City A.
While Yelena was helping me pack, she suddenly remembered: “Oh, did you know that parallel structure girl was faking her illness? She doesn’t have cancer at all.”
Jolene had found someone to forge fake certificates and fabricate medical reports and diagnosis papers, all to get Nathaniel to marry her. Now that the fake certificate operation had been busted, she got caught up in it too.
“Really? That’s good.” As long as she doesn’t bother me
anymore.
I didn’t expect to run into Nathaniel at the airport. He was out of breath as he stopped me, saying he wanted to talk to me one more time.
Though slightly winded, he was dressed in a sharp suit,

well–groomed, no longer the disheveled mess from that day.
He seemed to have returned to his former life.
Yelena said with a hint of mockery: “Bloody tears guy, back again? Parallel structure girl didn’t come with you?”
But deep in his eyes was exhaustion, and when he looked at me, there was a flicker of emotion that quickly returned to desolation.
“Jolene isn’t sick.” He spoke with his head down.
I nodded. I already knew that.
“The night of the storm, I already had my suspicions.”
I looked at my watch irritably. Time was running short.
