Every time I unconsciously shed tears, I can feel my body’s genuine emotional response to him.

He truly was my partner once–we spent five years together, day and night.
But now my subconscious is rejecting him, my body telling me to

“Impossible! How could you despise me!” His face showed complete disbelief, his eyes reddening, looking almost deranged. “Impossible! You said you loved me!”
He couldn’t accept my blunt confession of disgust and broke down crying on the spot.
I turned and walked away, warning him once again not to follow
- me.
This time he didn’t argue back, just silently followed me home.
When I closed the door, he didn’t force his way in either–just stood stubbornly at my doorstep without a word, as if waiting for my forgiveness.
The sky darkened and the wind picked up.

He was still standing at my front door.
Through the window, I saw his body sway slightly.

I felt momentarily dazed, as if in some distant past, someone had also waited downstairs for me.
Yelena called to invite me to dinner, but I hesitantly declined. With Nathaniel standing downstairs, I was afraid of getting entangled with him again if I went out.
But after hearing the whole story, Yelena just laughed dismissively and mocked, “Here we go again with this trick.”
“He’s a professional doorkeeper–been at it for twenty years.”
From Yelena’s account, I learned about some of my past with Nathaniel.
We were senior and junior classmates in college. When he first pursued me, I didn’t agree but wasn’t repulsed either–I gave him a chance.
Every time he walked me back to the dorm after lab work, he’d stand downstairs watching me go up, making sure I safely entered my room.
Whenever I casually mentioned some new gadget in our research group, he’d get his hands on it immediately, then wait

But just as I opened the door, I saw a thin but agile girl rushing over with an umbrella. She threw her arms around Nathaniel, crying and shaking him: “You fool, do you love her that much! Why won’t you turn around and look at me!”
“If I’d known you loved her this much, I never would have let you help me fulfill my dream.”
I had to admit, despite being so thin, this girl was surprisingly strong–she actually shook the unconscious Nathaniel awake.
Nathaniel was soaked through, shivering from the cold. After being shaken awake, he groggily opened his eyes, then suddenly snapped to attention: “Jo?”
“You idiot, Maeve is deliberately trying to kill you! Is such
a vicious woman really worth your love?” Jolene sobbed, heartbroken to see Nathaniel suffering, her eyes glaring at me with pure hatred.
