Jonathan checked the time. Since he had to head to the police station, he said, “If there’s nothing else, you can go. I won’t let Spencer off the hook. We’ll go strictly by law, and he must pay all the required compensation. That’s that.”
After Jonathan left, Heidi, with tears streaming down her face, turned to Irene for help. “Irene, what should we do? Please help George’s good–for–nothing brother?”
“I can’t help Spencer this time. We have to let the law take its course. You two should head home,” Irene said, motioning for Heidi and George to leave.
When Jonathan arrived at the police station, Benny had already been there with two lawyers.
Benny told Jonathan that his law firm was handling the case and reassured him that the court would probably go easy on Jennifer since he had shown forgiveness.
In the best case, Jennifer would get sentenced for just six months. That was probably the result of judgment.
Now all they could do was wait for the court date, file the paperwork, and let the process play out. Until the trial, Jennifer would have to be held in the detention center.
Donald anxiously asked Benny, “Is there really no way for Jennifer to avoid jail time?”
“She was a doctor who abused her authority and forged documents during her tenure. That’s fraud. What do you think?” Benny replied.
Donald fell silent. With his pleading eyes, he looked at Jonathan again.
There was nothing Jonathan could do. His deep eyes were bloodshot because he hadn’t slept for almost two nights, but he still stood tall and unyielding.
“Go home and get some rest,” Benny told Jonathan. “I caught up on sleep yesterday. Leave things here with me.”
After all, Jonathan was only human. He needed to go home, where Teresa and Michael were waiting for him. He hadn’t set foot in his home since he left the night before. Besides, Jonathan had already done everything he could.
As Jonathan was about to leave, Donald still wanted to ask him for help, but Gary stopped Donald.
“What else do you expect from Jonathan? Let him get some rest. If you have anything to say, talk to his lawyer friend,” Gary said.
The lawyer said, “Gary is right. Edward, oh, that’s not it. I mean, Donald, you can talk to me.”
Donald still wanted to see Jennifer, and Benny felt embarrassed. Even so, Benny managed to pull some strings and got Donald another chance to see Jennifer, but it could only last two minutes.
Donald worried that Jennifer wasn’t doing well, and his concern was right. She looked exhausted. Her hair hung loose and messy, and her lips were pale.
With difficulty, Donald told her the hard truth. “Jennifer, there’s a good chance you’ll have to go to jail.”
“I know,” Jennifer said. She was surprisingly calm. With indifference, she said, “Whatever, it doesn’t make a difference
anymore.”
There was nothing to be afraid of when one had nothing left. Jennifer didn’t think going to jail seemed like a big deal now. Her life was already ruined anyway, so she didn’t care if it got even worse.

The sound of crying caught Jennifer’s attention. She had been staring at the ground, but the sobbing made her slowly lift
her head.
With his shoulders drooping, Donald cried like a little kid. “Aren’t you scared? I’m really scared. I don’t even know how things ended up like this. I guess I’m just useless.”
“Donald, this isn’t on you. I made those mistakes. I brought it all on myself.” Jennifer said.
Jennifer had gotten lucky way too many times, including when she slapped Irene right in public. But there were times when she couldn’t run.
Tears streamed down Donald’s face. He asked, “Why did you have to get an abortion?”
