I was slowly drawn from the comforting depths of slumber by a soft, steady beeping. The darkness clung to me like molasses, wanting to keep me in its safe embrace and while I wanted to succumb to that seduction, something was niggling at the back of my mind telling me I needed to wake up,
The beeping grew louder, clearer until my other senses seemed to switch on as well, pulling me back into reality bit by bit. The pinching in my left hand was the next thing I noticed along with the feeling of scratchy material against my naked legs. The smell of cleaning products tickled my nose but was quickly pushed away by the familiar scent of cologne and cigarettes. I instinctively moved towards the scent wanting to drown in it and yet the more aware I became of my reality, the more my body began to hurt. My lungs protested with every breath I took and my body felt like one giant bruise.
I whimpered, my throat dry and scratchy, my stomach turning violently and my head pounding. I thought for a moment it was a hangover except, I hadn’t been drinking at the party.
The party!
My eyes snapped open reality crashing down on me like an ice cold wave. It took a moment to realise I wasn’t at the party and I wasn’t at home either. In fact, I was in a hospital bed with a monitor attached and an IV buried in my hand. I tried to sit up but the nausea hit like a punch to the gut and I gagged.
“Use this,” A familiar broke the terrifying silence as a weird paper bowl was thrust towards me. “The doctors said you might vomit when you woke up.”
I was barely listening as my stomach tried to push out everything in it yet nothing would come out. I felt the large hand gently rubbing soothing circles on my back as I hunched forward while a voice assured me it was going to be okay.
By the time the retching stopped, I was exhausted and my head felt like it was trying to split open. I could barely move to protest when the bowl was taken away.
“How are you feeling?” Aiden asked, his blue eyes studying me as if at any moment I might disappear.
“Awful.” I rasped, swallowing against the thick dryness in my mouth. “What happened? Why am I in hospital?”
“You don’t remember?” Aiden frowned.
“I remember I went to a house party and Liam wanted me to call so I went inside to call him.” I replied. “I don’t remember anything after that.”
Aiden was quiet for a while. I knew I should be freaking out but I was so tired and everything hurt. Still, the way Aiden looked at me had me worried. What wasn’t he telling me?
“Let me get the doctor and then we’ll talk,” He stood slowly. “Just try to relax.”
All I could do was watch helplessly as Afden disappeared out of the door leaving me alone with my thoughts. Letting out a heavy sigh, I tried desperately to remember what happened at the party and yet nothing came back to me. I became acutely aware of the bruises on my arms. My palms were scrapped raw and bloody and the painful heat radiating from my knees suggested they were just as bad. Lifting a hand, I touched my head only to wince and let out a hiss of pain when my left temple smarted with pain under the gauze.
What the hell happened to me?
