Chapter 5
The truth was right there, plain as day, black and white.
Words sharp as blades stabbed into Cassian’s eyes.
For a moment, he couldn’t think straight.
He stumbled back a few steps, completely stunned.
Then, ignoring the disgusted looks from strangers, Cassian let out a guttural, heart–wrenching scream.
Even though deep down he knew it was over, he still staggered forward, eyes wide with disbelief.
“This is insane!” he shouted.
“We had a deal! Why would you curse our baby like this?!”
I didn’t bother answering.
I just looked at his pitiful face with nothing but contempt.
He ignored the fact that I could barely stand and kept yelling.
“You’re a mother! How could you be this cruel?!”
I let out a cold, bitter laugh.
“How many times now? A hundred?
Even the best lie falls apart eventually.”
Cassian would rather assume the worst of me than face the truth.
I shook my head and said calmly:
“Our child…
He died after the hundredth time you turned your back on us.”
He never got the chance to see the world.
And now, even his death had to be questioned by his own father.
Maybe that’s for the best.
There’s nothing beautiful about this dirty, broken world anyway.
My eyes were dry, but something heavy was settling in my chest.

Chapter 5
Cassian stood there, pale as a ghost, unable to say a word.
Elowen hovered between us, lips trembling, too shaken to speak.
Of course she was scared.
She had the upper hand all this time-
She never imagined I’d still matter to Cassian.
“Seraphina,” she whispered, “Cassian and I are getting married soon.
You… you can’t be serious about this, right?”
I stepped forward, voice sharp.
“I don’t joke about life and death.”
“That’s enough!”
Cassian snapped, then went silent again.
The air grew heavy around us.
I stood there watching, waiting to see how far she’d take this little act.
Elowen turned to Cassian, trying to sound gentle.
“Cassian, what’s done is done.
There’s no point torturing yourself. Maybe we should-”
She should’ve known better.
That kind of talk was like throwing gasoline on fire.
Cassian shoved her away.
Back in the day, this kind of drama happened all the time.
I can’t believe I stayed quiet through it all for so long.
Elowen stumbled back dramatically-
And suddenly started convulsing, collapsing right there on the ground.
I didn’t even blink.
What a terrible performance.
But of course, someone would fall for it.

Cassian panicked and rushed to lift her up.
“Seraphina… I was too stubborn.
I never considered how you felt.”
I stared at the man who once held my heart-
Now holding his high school sweetheart like she was made of glass.
“Funny,” I said.
“That ‘once upon a time‘ must’ve been real long ago.
Nice of you to finally remember it.”
“You have to wait for me.
Let’s sit down and talk–really talk.”
Now he wanted to talk?
Was I just someone he could summon when he pleased, and toss aside just as easily?
“We’ve had this talk a hundred times.
The divorce is done.
You got what you wanted.
What’s left to say?”
“But-”
“Take care of her first, will you?
Your fiancée is still passed out, remember?”
I turned around and walked away.
Left behind were Cassian’s memories of “what we used to be.”
Love stories, tragic romances-
They’re just bedtime lies we feed ourselves to sleep at night.
That strange feeling tightening in my chest?
I finally knew what it was.
My pride.

The kind that refuses to be trampled again.
And it screamed one thing-
Cut the cord.
