Chapter 46
I pulled my phone from my bag to kill time while the other students came in and we also waited for the teacher. A new message was waiting for me this time with a photo. The photo was of Kyle and me. He had his arm slung over my shoulders and despite the angle and distance it was taken from, it was obvious we were talking about something. Kyle was grinning and I was frowning.
The photo had been taken as we walked to class just now.
“Unknown: do you let any boy who smiles at you touch you?
Unknown: I bet you let him do more than rest his arm on you.
Unknown: you’re not fooling anyone with that shy girl act.
I frowned in annoyance. Did this person not have anything better to do? 3
Me: Go to hell
I shoved my phone back where I found it and chose to ignore it for the rest of the day. Someone was playing a seriously sick joke and I wanted no part in it. I figured that if I didn’t give them a reaction anymore they’d get bored, if they hadn’t taken the hint already.
Kyle went on about the party for most of the day. I suspected he had come to the decision that we were going even if I hadn’t actually agreed to anything yet. I knew this was just his version of peer pressure, a not so subtle attempt at breaking down my resolve. By the end of the day Kyle had worn me down. I was willing to go to some party for him knowing he needed to blow off some steam. I knew he had other friends he could go with but for some reason I had to be there too.
“Okay! Okay! Okay!” I cried when Kyle’s pestering finally won out. “I’ll go but after work.”
The sun had already dipped somewhere near the horizon and soft pinks and purples were now bleeding into the clear skies. The streets were darker and the air crisp as we slowly wandered to the diner, deciding to eat there rather than go home and stare mindlessly at the TV.
The diner was a popular haunt for students after school so it was no surprise that it was busy; the usual cliques congregated at their chosen tables. The popular ones were of course at the biggest and best table. I always thought Kyle would fit in well with them given his charisma, looks and that he used to play football yet he showed no interest in joining their ranks, especially when he learned Noah was one of the gang. The drama club kids, the band kids and science club kids were huddled in their own groups at tables scattered through the place.
I immediately relaxed when I saw Noah was nowhere to be seen, not wanting to deal with that dark

piercing look and the cold fear he filled me with.
I assumed we would find a small table at the back so imagine my surprise and silent panic when Kyte drew me towards a table already occupied by three other people. All three occupants looked up and smiled at Kyle as we approached before their gaze went to me. I instantly saw the change from friendliness to curiosity and even suspicion as if I was encroaching on their territory or 1 was the
enemy,
“Hey guys, this is Ellie.” Kyle announced as he dumped his bag at the foot of a chair. “Ellie this is
Bianca, Max and Jesse.”
I shyly raised a hand to wave at the three table occupants, their eyes softening when Kyle introduced
- me.
“So this is the elusive Ellie Ramirez you keep telling us about.” Bianca spoke up. “I was starting to
think you had made her up.”
“No, she’s just shy and a hermit.” Kyle replied, giving me a cheeky smile as he pulled me into the seat next to him. “But she’s agreed to come to the party!”
“Amazing.” Max grinned. “So is a beautiful girl like you seeing anyone?”
“Ew gross.” Jesse wrinkled their nose in disgust, grey eyes glaring at Max before turning to me, features softening once again. “Ignore him. Max thinks he’s a regular ladies man but his chat up lines sound like they’ve been written by his kid brother.”
“Uh, my older brother actually.” Max playfully corrected Jesse.
Max was clearly the joker of the group and was pleasant to look at if you were attracted to boyish features. His warm brown hair was long to his ears and his green eyes sparkled mischievously. His dress sense was similar to Kyle’s; band t–shirt, ripped jeans, large denim jacket and boots. Only Max had piercings in his ears.
“So how long have you known Kyle for, Ellie?” Bianca asked, blue eyes assessing me curiously.
“Not long.” I admitted. “Turns out his cousin and my brother are best friends so Kyle just sort of turned up one day and we have been friends since. What about you?”
“Since the beginning of high school.” Bianca replied. “It sucked when he had to move schools but we should have known it wouldn’t be that easy to shake him from the friend group.”
“You love me really.” Kyle teased. “You’re just sour that we don’t have chem with each other
anymore.”
“You certainly knew how to make it interesting.” Bianca chuckled. “So you’re coming to the party, Ellie? It’ll be nice to have another girl to hang with.”

“Yeah… so wait, this isn’t a party being thrown by someone at West Linn? I asked.
“Hell no.” Max snorted. As far as I know, you two are the only ones from West Linn who knows
about it.
And suddenly I felt a hell of a lot better about going to this party.
