Chapter 4

Blake looked panicked for a split second before pulling her toward the back garden.

“Babe, Sloane needs to discuss something urgent with me. We’ll talk in the garden so we don’t disturb your breakfast.”

From the second-floor window, I had a perfect view of Sloane throwing herself into Blake’s arms.

But Blake looked furious as he yanked her away.

“Are you INSANE?! I told you NEVER to come to my house! If Meredith figures out what’s going on between us, you’re DEAD!”

Sloane burst into tears at his shouting, pulling a paper from her bag.

“I know I shouldn’t be here, but… I’m pregnant.”

“The doctor said yesterday was too intense-the pregnancy isn’t stable. I’m scared, Blake. What if something happens to our baby? This is our first child.”

Hearing this, my body went rigid. My heart felt like it was being crushed by an invisible fist.

Sloane was… PREGNANT?

When we first got married, we’d talked about kids. But Blake said children would divide our attention-he wanted to keep our marriage’s love pure and complete, so he didn’t want children.

Back then, I’d been so touched by his devotion that I’d agreed immediately.

Now I understood. Even though he told ME no kids, that didn’t stop him from knocking up other women.

Blake looked shocked at first, then relaxed after reading the paper.

“Nine weeks along? Yeah, you gotta be super careful in the first trimester.”

“Head to the car, I’ll be right there. We’re getting you checked out again-I’m not letting anything happen to this baby.”

Sloane instantly brightened up, moving in close to plant one on him.

Blake’s eyes went dark as he gripped the back of her head, taking control.

They kissed passionately, Sloane’s arms around his neck, until Blake finally pushed her away, his voice rough.

“You’re still trying to seduce me when you’re pregnant? There’s a baby in there-now go wait in the car like a good girl.”

Seeing him about to return to the house, I quickly went back downstairs to the breakfast table.

At this point, I almost felt grateful we’d never had children. At least now I could leave without any strings attached.

Blake came back in wearing that familiar apologetic expression.

“Hey babe, work emergency-I need to fly out like, now. Be a good girl and stay put while I’m away, yeah? I’ll grab you something special on my way back.”

I nodded to show I understood.

Chapter 4

Only after making sure I looked normal did he feel safe enough to leave.

I watched him walk away, then glanced at the calendar-two more days until I left. This might be the last time I’d ever see him.

That afternoon, I got a text from an unknown number.

It was an ultrasound image.

[Heads up-I’ve got Blake’s bun in the oven. His FIRST kid. You infertile old bat, wise up and divorce his ass before I take what’s mine anyway!]

Even from a random number, I knew it had to be Sloane.

Having his baby in her belly must’ve given her the confidence to go for the wife position.

But since I’d already decided to leave and was completely done with Blake, seeing that ultrasound didn’t even make me flinch.

Blake really didn’t come home for the next two days.

I used the time to clear out everything in the house that belonged to me-donating what I could, burning what I couldn’t, keeping only essential items for the lab.

On my last morning, I got up early and packed everything into my suitcase, waiting for the facility’s car.

Just as I was about to text my professor about pickup time, another message from Sloane popped up.’

This time it was a photo of her in a wedding dress, standing in a field of flowers while Blake knelt before her with a ring.

[Blake proposed! We’re getting married today. He said he’ll give me and the baby a proper life together-the wedding is just the first step.]

[No wonder he’s been sneaking off to make phone calls. He was planning this huge surprise for me! He said even though it’s rushed, he’s getting me the best of everything. He wants me to be the happiest bride and mom in the world.]

[Next time he comes home, he’ll probably slap divorce papers right in your face. If you want to keep any dignity, you better get the hell out of that house before then. I’ll be the lady of the house soon enough!]

This time I actually replied: [Congrats. You’re about to get exactly what you wanted.]

Right after I sent that, my ride arrived. I grabbed my suitcase and got in the car.

At a red light, I heard people on the sidewalk gasping.

“Holy shit, who’s getting married with THIS much money? Talk about flexing!”

I instinctively looked over and saw Blake in his tux, sitting in the back of a Maybach, gently fixing Sloane’s hair with pure adoration.

When he finished and looked up, our eyes met. His face went white with terror.

Immediately, my phone started ringing.
