The man who used to treat me so gently was now saying something so cold and cruel. If I hadn’t been mentally pre- pared, I might’ve passed out from the shock.
When I didn’t respond, Marcus grew more impatient.
“Kyler and Elie are used to living here, so I bought you a downtown condo instead.
“I’ll have my assistant take you-”
Smack!
Before he could finish, I slapped him hard across the face without even blinking.
His head snapped to the side from the slap.
Elie screamed and rushed to hold his face, crying out, “Marcus!”
Then she turned to glare at me, no longer looking weak and fragile.
“This is all my fault. If you want to hit someone, hit me–argh!”
I raised my hand again and slapped her across the face.
Only then did I sneer and say, “You’re right. It is your fault. And you deserved that.
“Elie, we’ve known each other since we were kids, but I never imagined you could be this shameless.” Then I looked
at Marcus and added, “Thanks for your generosity–a downtown condo isn’t cheap.”
I couldn’t stand being in that suffocating place a second longer. Just as I turned to leave, a toy Ultraman suddenly hit me in the head.
A sharp pain followed, and blood slowly trickled down from my scalp.
I looked up to see Kyler at the second–floor railing, clutching a pile of toys and glaring furiously at me.
“You bad woman! How dare you bully Elie!
“I’ll beat you! Beat you to death!
“You wicked witch! You’re not allowed to hurt Elie–I’ll make you regret it!”
With each scream, he hurled toy after toy at my face. The blows were relentless, and blood blurred my vision.
Marcus and Elie’s betrayal didn’t break me, but Kyler taking her side without hesitation… that shattered me.
I held back my tears, took a deep breath, and slowly walked away from the house I once saw as my safe haven.

After leaving Laurence’s villa, I took a cab to Green–Wood Cemetery.
I stayed on my knees in front of the grave, staring at the two faces I would never see again. I finally couldn’t hold back my tears.
The bleak wind emphasized the scene’s sorrow. My heart ached with hate and sadness.
I cried for what felt like forever. It wasn’t until nightfall that I finally left the cemetery.
I didn’t go to the fancy downtown condo Marcus had so generously given me. Instead, I went back to the apartment my parents bought for me before the marriage.
I lay in bed all night, unable to sleep, and by morning, I’d made up my mind.
This ridiculous marriage with Marcus was over–there was no saving it.
But Kyler, the son I risked everything to bring into this world, I could never let him go.
There was no reason for me to stay in New York anymore. If possible, I wanted to take Kyler and start a new life somewhere else.
Just thinking about it reignited the fire in me.
I got up, washed up, did my makeup carefully, changed into a fresh outfit, and headed straight to Kyler’s school.
