Chapter 20
After that, she planned to take her mother to Sanya for the New Year.
But now… she was pregnant.
Sophia rested a hand on her lower belly.
She hadn’t yet decided whether to keep the child.
What would Vincent do if he found out?
Would he care?
Would he treat this child the same way he treated Rowan?
She scoffed bitterly at her own thoughts.
Of course not.
Vincent only loved Rowan because he loved Doris.
It was always about Doris.
Sophia covered her face with both hands.
Stop it.
Stop dreaming like a fool.
Don’t humiliate yourself again.
Knock knock
She wiped her face quickly.
“Come in,” she said.
Betty poked her head in.
“Sophia–Rowan’s here.”
Sophia frowned.
“He’s still sick. Why is he here?”
“Vincent dropped him off at the door. Told me to bring him in.”
Before Betty could finish, Rowan walked in, hugging his cartoon backpack.
“Mommy!”
Sophia walked over and touched his forehead. Still warm.
“Where’s your dad?”
“He’s working. He said he couldn’t take care of me. And I missed you…”
Rowan looked up at her with pitiful, watery eyes.
Sophia picked up her phone and dialed Vincent.

Chapter 20
No answer.
Again.
Still no answer.
She clenched the phone tight.
He was doing this on purpose.
Her expression grew cold.
Rowan noticed.
His face fell.
“…Mommy, are you mad at me?”
“If you don’t want me anymore, I’ll leave…”
Tears began to fall down his cheeks.
Sophia’s heart softened instantly.
“No, baby. Of course not.”
She pulled him into her arms. “You’re still sick. I just didn’t know if I could take good care of you right now.”
“I’m not sick anymore.”
Rowan grabbed her hand and pressed it to his forehead.
“See? No fever. I promise I’ll be good and not bother you. Please let me stay…”
He pouted.
Sophia let out a long sigh.
She touched his warm cheek.
“Did you drink the soup I made?”
“I did!” Rowan grinned proudly. “A whole big bowl!”
“Did you bring your medicine?”
“Yep!” He patted his backpack. “I also brought my toys and bedtime storybooks!”
Sophia tapped his nose.
“You never forget those books, do you? Alright. But go lie down now. You need rest. I still have work.”
“Okay!”
Sophia worked late–past midnight.
When she returned to the studio’s rest area, Rowan was already asleep.
After showering, she came to check on him.

Chapter 20
He was still clutching a smartwatch in his hand.
Probably something Doris had bought him.
She placed it gently on the nightstand beside him.
It was good, she supposed, that Doris was trying to be a real mother.
That was good for Rowan.
She didn’t know how she felt about it.
Of course she minded.
But she also knew it was inevitable–and not her place to interfere,
All she could do was be there when he needed her.
She turned off the light and lay down.
But at 2 a.m., Sophia was jolted awake.
Rowan’s body felt like a furnace.
His skin was burning.
She flipped on the light.
His face was bright red.
A thermometer confirmed it–39.8°C.
Panic surged through her.
She quickly gave him fever meds.
But thirty minutes passed. No change.
Without hesitation, she changed clothes, wrapped him in blankets, and rushed to the hospital.
On the way, she tried calling Vincent again.
Still no answer.
At the hospital, she filled out paperwork and got Rowan admitted.
Finally, she tried again.
This time, someone picked up.
But it wasn’t Vincent.
It was Doris,
“Miss Sophia,” her voice soft and sweet over the line.
“Sorry. Vincent’s in the shower. Is there something urgent?”
