Chapter 9
I mentioned earlier that I wanted to get new toothbrushes for the whole family, but I actually had Eloise and Stephen’s old toothbrushes sent for paternity testing.
The results confirmed exactly what she had told me in her previous life-Stephen wasn’t her biological son.
Stephen fell silent for a while before finally accepting this reality.
He recalled the dream I had mentioned earlier, and everything suddenly clicked. Eloise had planned from the beginning to switch our children, and when that failed, she stayed in our home and even secretly mixed harmful substances into the laundry detergent, all to kill Henry so that Jasper could inherit the family fortune.
Gripping the paternity test report with trembling hands, he said through gritted teeth, “Mom, you’re absolutely ruthless!”
Seeing her scheme exposed, Eloise immediately burst into tears. “Stephen, John and I couldn’t have children for so long, so we adopted you. At my age, I finally had a child of my own and lost my mind for a moment… I was possessed by greed, thinking that the Fowler family fortune should ultimately be controlled by my biological child.”
Stephen’s face darkened. “So you felt justified in trying to kill
Henry? Wouldn’t we have taken care of you? Would I have mistreated Jasper?”
Finally, he made his decision: “From today on, you’re going back to the countryside. We’ll provide you with support money, but you can never come back to disturb our lives again.”
Stephen and I moved to a more secluded upscale neighborhood where Eloise could never find us, let alone harm my child.
She was sent back to the countryside with Jasper’s belongings.
Unable to take revenge on me, she vented her fury on Emma instead.
Emma had fled in fear of punishment, but Eloise eventually tracked her down.
Like a madwoman, Eloise stabbed Emma dozens of times, shouting “Give me back my son!” with each thrust.
Emma died on the spot, and the police arrested Eloise.
She pretended to be insane in front of the officers and was eventually sent to a psychiatric hospital.
When she was admitted, I saw her one last time.
The moment she saw me, she exclaimed excitedly, “No, your son should have been switched by me from the beginning, killed by
me! My son should be the one inheriting the fortune. You and Stephen should both die, both die!”
I smiled coldly and whispered in her ear, “Sorry, but thanks to Jasper tricking me into that rafting trip, I got to live again.”
Eloise suddenly burst into maniacal laughter. “So that’s it! No wonder you knew about switching the children back, no wonder it was Jasper who died! If dying means you can start over, then I
should die too!”
With that, she lunged toward the wall.
The doctors stopped her just in time, attributing it to her mental condition, and gave her a sedative. She collapsed limply.
Before leaving, I specifically instructed the doctors to watch her carefully and not let her commit suicide.
I didn’t want someone like her to have another chance at a
do-over.
She had to live a long life and witness our family of three living happily together.
