Chapter 16
Half an hour later, Sophia and Rowan returned to the Moonlight Villa.
Vincent wasn’t home.
Rowan waited for ten minutes before growing impatient.
“Mommy, can you call Daddy and ask when he’s coming back?”
Sophia thought Vincent would’ve been back by now, too.
She’d planned to leave for the hospital once he arrived.
But when she called him, the line connected–only no one picked up.
Three times
Still no answer.
Sophia sighed, forcing a calm smile for Rowan.
“He’s probably busy.”
Rowan’s brows furrowed.
Was Daddy comforting Mommy right now?
Was Mommy crying again?
The thought made him anxious.
And guilty.
He shouldn’t have hugged Sophia earlier. If he hadn’t, maybe she wouldn’t have been sad.
It must’ve made Mommy feel worse….
Rowan grew more upset the longer he thought about it. He even started looking at Sophia with a trace of frustration in his little eyes.
But Sophia didn’t notice.
She was too busy messaging Karina.
Sophia: [Something came up. Let’s reschedule the checkup to tomorrow.]
Karina: [I’m on early shift tomorrow. Just come by.]
Sophia: [Okay.]
Karina: [Let me guess. You still haven’t tested, have you?]
Sophia glanced at her bag, feeling a flicker of guilt.
Sophia: [Going to test now.]
Karina sent her an angry hammer emoji.
Sophia replied with a guilty face meme.
She stood up and grabbed her bag.

“Rowan, Mommy’s going to the bathroom.”
Rowan didn’t answer.
Sophia assumed he was sulking because of Vincent, and didn’t think much of it.
She headed upstairs.
Once she closed the door to the master bedroom, Rowan bolted into his own room.
He reached under his pillow and pulled out the smartwatch Doris had given him.
Her number was saved as the first contact.
He tapped to call.
The phone rang a few times before it was picked up.
“Rowan?”
Vincent’s voice came through, low and breathy.
Rowan blinked.
“Daddy? Why are you answering? Where’s Mommy?”
“She’s resting,” Vincent replied. “She just fell asleep. Why? What’s wrong?”
“Did Mommy cry?”
Rowan’s voice dropped.
Vincent didn’t deny it.
“She’s fine now.”
“I’m worried about her.”
Rowan clutched the watch tighter. “Daddy, I’m back home now. Can you come pick me up? I want to be with Mommy.”
“Okay,” Vincent said. “I’m on my way.”
Rowan beamed.
He tucked the watch into his coat pocket and ran downstairs.
He plopped onto the sofa, turned on the TV, and waited happily for his dad.
Upstairs, in the bathroom, Sophia stood frozen.
In her hand was the pregnancy test.
Her fingertips had turned white from how tightly she was holding it.
Downstairs, a car pulled into the driveway.
Vincent was back.
Still gripping the test, Sophia opened the bathroom door.

Chapter 16
Down below, Rowan’s voice rang out, full of joy.
“Daddy”
Sophis walked down the stairs slowly, the step at a time
Rowan stood on the coach with his arms open wide.
“Daddy! Pick me up.”“
Vincent leaned forward and lifted him with ease.
Sophia’s gaze dropped to Vincent’s clothes.
They weren’t what he was wearing earber.
He’d changed.
She remembered the missed calls. The delay. The breathless voice on the phone. The woman who had just fallen asleep.
And then the pieces clicked into place.
The truth–brutal, unfiltered–hit her like a blade.
He had been with another woman
