Chapter 4
I was furious and absolutely couldn’t let the tragedy from my past life repeat itself.
Eloise was currently in the operating room having a C-section, so logically she should have been too preoccupied to manage anything else. So who exactly was conspiring with her to secretly switch the babies?
Stephen thought I was blaming him for not taking better care of me, and said with a face full of guilt: “It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t been so busy working overtime lately, you wouldn’t have gotten hurt. When I got Emma’s call, I was terrified. Thank God you and the baby are both safe!”
At that moment, Emma by the neighboring bed whispered a reminder: “Sir, please keep your voice down. Eloise is still resting.”
I stared at Emma’s face, wondering if she might be Eloise’s accomplice.
Turning my head, I saw Eloise holding Henry, quietly resting against the neighboring bed.
I couldn’t help but clench my fists.
Looking at the two babies in identical outfits, I already had a plan forming in my mind.
During these two days in the hospital, I noticed Eloise occasionally observing me, so I kept pretending to be completely oblivious while showing extra affection toward Jasper.
Finally, when Eloise let her guard down and went for her follow-up examination, I deliberately sent Emma away and pulled Stephen aside, saying to him with a serious expression: “Stephen, don’t try to stop me from what I’m about to do. When it’s over, I’ll explain everything to you.”
Under Stephen’s astonished gaze, I quickly switched Henry
back.
He looked confused and asked: “What are you doing? Isn’t that our child?”
Footsteps could be heard outside the door. I held Henry tightly and whispered: “Stephen, trust me. I’ll explain everything in detail when we get back!”
Soon, Emma returned with Eloise, and her expression changed slightly when she saw the child on the bed.
But they couldn’t say anything.
If they questioned the child’s identity, it would only arouse Stephen’s suspicion, and I could demand a paternity test from the doctor at any time.
They certainly couldn’t openly snatch the child either.
Looking at the sleeping child in my arms, I finally breathed a sigh of relief.
In this lifetime, I would definitely protect Henry well and never lose him again.
Once we were in the private room, I finally had the chance to explain everything to Stephen.
I began hesitantly: “Stephen, when I was giving birth, I had a dream. In the dream, our son was switched by Eloise, and she even killed him with her own hands. Later, Eloise’s son was raised by us, tricked us into going rafting, and we all died in that accident. The dream was so vivid that I still get chills thinking about it. If you don’t believe me, we can take the child for a paternity test right now.”
Stephen stood by my side without hesitation: “I believe you. Actually, when I first held the child, I felt he didn’t really look like us—he looked more like Eloise. The eyes of the child they were holding looked exactly like yours.”
After saying this, he took out his phone and showed me a surveillance video: “The camera you secretly had installed really came in handy. Emma said you fell on your own, but the surveillance clearly shows she knocked you down.”
I nodded, and the events of that day gradually became clearer in
my mind.
“Eloise definitely couldn’t have completed the baby-switching plan alone. Emma must be her accomplice,” I analyzed.
With my and the child’s safety at stake, Stephen was immediately furious: “Then I’ll go fire Emma right now!”
I stopped him: “Don’t rush. Their plan didn’t succeed this time, so they’ll naturally make another move. Let’s wait for them to show their hand, then catch them.”
Only then did Stephen suppress his anger and nod in agreement: “Alright.”
In the following days, Eloise didn’t pull any more tricks.
Unlike in my previous life, she didn’t come to my room almost daily to see the child, praising Jasper while subtly mocking Henry.
But the more well-behaved she was, the more uneasy I felt. They must still be brewing some more terrible scheme.
