People in the hallway stopped and stared, but Jennifer couldn’t care less about saving face anymore.
She said, “I’ve made a lot of mistakes in the past. This time, I’m sincerely apologizing to you for everything I’ve done before. First of all, thank
you.
“Thank you for all the help you’ve given me and Donald, and for everything you’ve done for Teresa and our family. I really mean it.
“You gave me the chance to be deputy director for Teresa and Donald’s sake, but I was so scared of losing my job and my family that I kept messing with the paternity test results between you and Mike.
“Because of me, you and your son were kept apart for so long, and I even managed to convince myself I wasn’t doing anything wrong. I’m truly sorry.
“Whether as a doctor or just as a person, I failed to show any gratitude for what you did for me–instead, I ended up hurting you. I’m truly sorry. I sincerely apologize to you for all those mistakes I made.”
She kept her pose for a long while. At that moment, she was no longer the arrogant and overbearing Jennifer who thought the world revolved around her. She was someone who had finally learned what it meant to be grateful.
She continued, “I’m sorry. I was wrong. Back then, I wasn’t a good sister, and I wasn’t a good doctor.”
Donald stood there in silence, not trying to beg Jonathan for forgiveness. He knew he had neither the right nor the standing to ask for it.
This time, Jennifer was only saved because of Jonathan. If it hadn’t been for Jonathan’s connections and how he got everyone to help search for Jennifer, and if he hadn’t called the police in time, Jennifer might not have made it out alive.
“If you’re truly remorseful, then from now on, treat Teresa and Mike better. If you ever hurt them again, I’ll make you pay for it,” Jonathan
said.
With that, Jonathan stepped around Jennifer and left. The elevator doors slowly slid shut.
Donald helped Jennifer up and said, “Alright. You heard what Jonathan said. Just focus on treating your family right from now on. As for Teresa, Jonathan will take care of her.”
Jennifer nodded slowly, and then finally stood straight.
Jonathan came back to the ward with the fruit, and Teresa immediately noticed that he was in a bad mood. Just as Teresa was about to ask if something had happened, there was a knock at the door.
Donald came in, carrying a bag of food. He said, “Hey, Teresa.” Then he set the bag down on the table.
He asked, “How are you feeling? Thanks for what you and Jonathan did today. Jennifer bought these for you a while ago. She asked me to bring them up for you. She didn’t want to disturb your rest, so she didn’t come up herself.”
“I’m fine, but there’s no way I can finish all this. You and Jennifer should take them back and enjoy them together,” Teresa said, making a move to get out of bed. Donald hurriedly stopped her.
Donald turned to Jonathan and said, “I’m heading out now. Jonathan, Jennifer wanted me to pass a message to you.”
“Let’s talk outside,” Jonathan replied.
Once Jonathan stepped outside, Donald finally spoke up, “Jennifer wanted you to know that all the tampering with the paternity test results was entirely her own decision. It had nothing to do with Teresa.
