Teresa thought she had misheard. ‘What did Jennifer say? She doesn’t want to live anymore?‘ she wondered.
Jennifer said, “What’s the point of living without Donald?”
Teresa tried to comfort her. “These days, everyone can live on their own. I’m divorced now, and I’m still doing just fine.” She thought, ‘The world keeps turning. There’s no need to dwell on it.’
Jennifer suddenly dropped to the ground, looking completely shattered. “I’ve lost everything. No love, no career, and not even the baby I was carrying. There’s nothing left for me.”
As she spoke, she wiped away her tears. “I have to find my real mom and get her to acknowledge me. Maybe then Donald will see how rough my life has been, feel sorry for me, and call off the divorce.”
Teresa’s expression was complicated. “If a man only stays with you out of pity, is that really a marriage worth having? Come on, Snap out of it.”
Jennifer.
“I am clear–headed, Teresa. I just can’t lose him. Right now, I only have two wishes. To find my birth mother and hope Donald won’t divorce me,” Jennifer replied.
Teresa hesitated for a long time before finally saying, “Just don’t get your hopes up too much.”
“What do you mean?” Jennifer looked up sharply.
Teresa sighed. “I mean, people change. Maybe your birth mother isn’t the same person she used to be. After all, she’s in the plastic surgery
business.”
Jennifer slowly stood up. “I don’t care what she looks like. Evelyn said she’s a strong, independent woman. That’s all that matters to me.”
Teresa pressed her lips together, wanting to say something but holding back. “I’ll drive you home.”
“No, I’ll drive myself,” Jennifer said.
Teresa rolled her eyes. “You’ve been drinking. How are you going to drive?” She snatched Jennifer’s car keys, shoved her into the car, and drove her home.
Jennifer leaned back in the passenger seat and let out a bitter laugh. “You won’t even drink with me anymore?”
“I’m pregnant. How could I possibly drink with you?” Teresa replied.
“Yeah, you’re right.” Jennifer rubbed her forehead. “Sorry, I’ve had so much to drink that my head is all fuzzy.”
“Just go home and get some sleep. I’ve said all I needed to today. Even if it really comes to a divorce, you’ll just have to accept it and move
on,” Teresa said.
She thought, ‘Isn’t it true that everyone has to pay for their mistakes?‘
Jennifer still shook her head. “I won’t get divorced. I’m sure he won’t actually go through with it. But if he really does, I really can’t go on.”
Teresa just remained silent as she drove.
After dropping Jennifer off, Teresa took a cab home. The whole way, she couldn’t stop thinking about what Jennifer had said.

If Jennifer really did something to hersell, Evelyn would be heartbroken. In Evelyn’s eyes, even though Jennifer isn’t her real daughter, she still treats her like family. She never wanted to hurt Jennifer, Teresa thought.
When Teresa got home, Michael wanted to video call. She took a deep breath, forced a smile, and answered.
“Mom!” Michael’s voice came through.
“Hey, sweetie,” Teresa said, sitting on the couch and holding up her phone. She noticed the crystal chandelier behind Michael and asked, “Where are you guys staying?”
Michael propped his chin on his hand. “We’re at Mr. Daddy Lime’s big villa, of course. We were there last time. Don’t you remember?”
Teresa smiled and said, “That’s great. You must be having a blast living in such a big villa, huh?”
“Mr. Lime’s a bit down. He said he misses you,” Michael said.
Teresa was stunned to hear that.
Suddenly, a slender hand appeared on the screen, taking the phone, and Jonathan’s handsome face came into view. “Oh, I never said that,” he said.
