Chapter 6
As he set down the gift boxes, my son said nonchalantly,
“No problem. If you want, I’ll ask Mom to reheat the food.”
“Or if you’d prefer it fresh, she can just cook another meal.”
His grandmother nodded immediately.
“Yes, yes, whatever Chloe wants is fine.”
Chloe smirked and settled onto the sofa like royalty, legs elegantly crossed.
Her tone was breezy, indifferent.
‘Let’s talk about it later.”
‘I’m still full from the pizza anyway. Let’s get to the real business first.”
My husband gave my sleeve a gentle tug and urged in a low voice,
‘Aren’t you going to apologize?”
Come on.”
But before I could speak, my son cut in proudly, “Mom, I already bought Chloe a bunch of gift: oday to make up for what happened.”
She’s forgiven you. No need to apologize anymore.”
My mother-in-law beamed. “I knew it! Chloe is such a kind, understanding girl.”
So generous, so forgiving.”
Chloe casually played with her perfectly manicured nails.
Of course. I’m not like some people who make a fuss over 300 dollars and cling to their family ke a leech.”
My husband quickly added, “Yes, yes. My wife manages all the housework and budgeting, so she night be a little tight with money. Please don’t take it to heart.”
glanced at the array of luxury gift boxes and asked calmly,
Where did you get the money to buy all this?”
My son shrugged, utterly unconcerned, “I pawned the car you bought me.”
Mom, I know you care about pride and appearances, so I made the sacrifice myself, just to buy Chloe the gifts she deserves. She’s already forgiven you, so be sure to bring the money later and jet my car back.”
gave a faint smile and nodded.
‘Alright.”
Seeing me stoop so low without a word of protest, Chloe’s arrogance flared even higher.
With a sneer, she pulled out a sheet of paper from her handbag and slapped it on the coffee table.
‘I won’t bother rehashing everything you did to upset me.”
“But I was deeply humiliated and I want to make sure this never happens again after I marry into
your family.”
“So, if you want this to go smoothly, you’ll have to agree to these terms.”
I glanced down at the paper.
Line after line of printed text. Cold, dense and demanding:
1.A fully paid wedding house of at least 150 square meters in the city center, registered solely under Chloe Sinclair’s name.
2.A brand-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class as her personal car.
3.A dowry of 500,000 dollars, not including the three gold items and wedding.
4.The wedding must be held at a five-star hotel, with a minimum budget of 500,000 dollars.
- After marriage, we will not live with in-laws. In-laws must provide a monthly living subsidy of 20,000 dollars.
6.Any future child must carry the mother’s surname.
7….
8….
And the list went on, each condition more absurd than the last.
My mother-in-law’s face paled slightly as she murmured in distress,
‘Chloe… isn’t this asking a bit too much?”
Even my husband frowned. “Yes, if you two get married, of course we’ll treat you well. We’d neve et you suffer.”
“Can’t we talk about easing a few of these conditions?”
Chloe smiled sweetly, then turned to me with a glint in her eye.
‘My dear mother-in-law seems so careful about every penny. I’m sure she’s saved quite a bit ove the years, right?”
‘If she really loves her son, these little requests should be easy for her to fulfill.”
At that, both my husband and mother-in-law turned to look at me.
Their expressions were awkward, yet unmistakably expectant.
I met their eyes, smiled faintly and said…
