Chapter 16
Looking at Alexander’s crazed expression, Caroline felt nothing but irony.
She sneered, “Alexander, you say you love me, but why didn’t you investigate the truth when Mila framed me? Why did you agree to Mila’s plan for revenge against me? Why didn’t you tell me the truth?
“Don’t make excuses. I gave you a chance. In that fire, I asked if you would come back. At that moment, I thought if you could turn around immediately and pull me out of the flames, I could forgive you, even forget everything from the past.
“But what did you do then?”
Caroline’s long speech was met with Alexander’s prolonged
silence.
That fire had happened so long ago that Alexander had almost forgotten the scene.
But he still remembered that he hadn’t answered her then, just hesitated for a moment before walking away without looking back.
Caroline continued, “You could abandon me in that fire, so what makes you think I’d stay for you?”

She moved to walk around him and leave. This time, however, Alexander reacted quickly. “Stop her!”
Caroline turned back in disbelief. “Alexander.”
She had thought that as long as Alexander felt even a trace of guilt toward her, he wouldn’t block her path again.
Alexander slowly approached her. This time, his hand finally
touched Caroline’s face.
He said, “Caroline, I admit I was wrong before.
“I’ve endured the punishment I deserved. Why can’t we start over? I know you’re still angry with me. From now on, I’ll make it up to you slowly, okay?”
“No!” Caroline jerked her head away, dodging his hand.
Perhaps due to extreme disappointment, her voice was somewhat choked.
She continued, “Alexander, you’ve already destroyed me once. Do you want to destroy me again?
“Won’t you be satisfied until you drive me to death?”
A flash of pain crossed Alexander’s eyes, but it quickly turned

resolute. “Caroline, I won’t let you die again.”

After that day, Caroline was forcibly kept by Alexander’s side.
To make her presence seem reasonable, Alexander specifically held a press conference.
He publicly explained that Caroline hadn’t died, but had only faked her death and left because of their quarrel. However, after more than a year of his efforts, Caroline had finally been won back and returned to his side.
When Alexander said these words, Caroline sat right beside him.
She coldly watched him put on his act of deep affection, watched the reporters below moved to tears.
For a moment, Caroline desperately wanted to grab the microphone from Alexander’s hand and expose his true nature
to everyone.
But in the end, she did nothing.
After being away for more than a year, Caroline’s voice carried no weight compared to Alexander’s.
Even if she spoke up, the reporters below would only treat her words as playful banter between them.

After the press conference, perhaps to demonstrate his love for Caroline, Alexander took her everywhere he went for the next month or so.
On a cruise ship, he celebrated Caroline’s birthday, setting off dozens of fireworks worth $200,000 each simultaneously, illuminating the entire sky.
At an auction, he bid on the most expensive emerald necklace for Caroline.
In the VIP suite of a luxury boutique, countless expensive gowns and jewelry filled the room for Caroline to choose from.
Caroline stood before the fitting mirror, her eyes numb as she watched Alexander behind her arrange one exclusive designer dress after another in front of her, asking for her opinion.
She just silently watched the two figures in the mirror, saying nothing.
Alexander wasn’t angry either, casually tossing the dress in his hand to the store manager Anna Morris nearby, telling her to have all these dresses packaged.
Anna had encountered generous customers before, but someone like Alexander who spent tens of millions of dollars in one visit was a first for her.

So Anna’s smile became even more genuine, saying every compliment she could think of.
She said, “Mrs. Scott, you’re so blessed to have such a loving husband.
“I hope you two will always be happy together.”
Alexander had heard all kinds of flattery in the business world, but this was the first time he’d heard such sincere words that
actually resonated with him.
In better spirits, he glanced at the display case Caroline was staring at absently. “Package those up too.”
Anna’s smile nearly split her face as she hurriedly directed the staff to pack everything while leading Alexander out to settle the bill.
Finally, Caroline, who had been lost in thought, stirred slightly.
At that moment, that thought surfaced in her mind again.
She wondered, “Should I escape?”
