Chapter 4

Far from the villa, a group of people screamed excitedly at the towering flames, frantically taking photos.

One man laughed and said, “The 99th successful revenge! Alexander is finally going to get rid of Caroline, that woman who only knows how to chase romance.”

Another man said, “When we go in later, I’m definitely going to take more photos of her breaking down and crying ugly, then post them online for the whole city to see.”

The dark red firelight illuminated their crazed faces with startling clarity.

Behind the crowd, Alexander listened to their conversation and felt uneasy for the first time.

Inexplicably, Caroline’s appearance when they parted suddenly flashed through his mind.

It was only then that he realized something: “Was Caroline too calm?”

In the past, every Christmas anniversary, Caroline was always the most excited one. From venue selection to preparing various

items, she enthusiastically handled everything herself. It could be said that the entire anniversary event was prepared by Caroline alone, and Alexander never had a chance to get involved from start to finish.

He thought this was fine too, since he didn’t like her at all anyway. In fact, he even maliciously wanted to blame her—if she hadn’t bullied Mila, the person celebrating the anniversary with him now wouldn’t be her at all.

But this anniversary, Caroline was really too quiet. From the drive to the villa, she sat quietly in the passenger seat. Except for a few inexplicable confessions, she didn’t ask a single question about the anniversary details. She was like a rag doll, letting Alexander manipulate her at will.

Moreover, Alexander had been gone for so long, and the fire had been burning for so long, yet Caroline hadn’t even called him

once.

After thinking about these strange things, Alexander quickly opened his phone. He kept refreshing the screen, but no matter how many times he refreshed, his call log and message interface with Caroline still showed no new content.

Alexander’s heartbeat began to race violently, and an ominous premonition instantly spread throughout his body. He suddenly looked up, his face pale as he stared at the villa being devoured by flames.

Finally, he could no longer stand still and prepared to run toward the villa.

“Alexander, where are you going?” a male voice called out.

Seeing Alexander running toward the villa, his friends were frightened and quickly blocked his path.

Just as Alexander was about to speak, a violent explosion suddenly erupted. A huge mushroom cloud instantly rose from above the villa.

Everyone’s faces changed immediately, realizing something terrible had happened.

Just as they were about to go forward to check the situation, explosion after explosion rang out. Accompanied by intermittent blasts, thick black smoke billowed out. Debris and fragments flew everywhere, shooting in all directions like sharp arrows.

“Caroline!” Alexander shouted.

His mind went blank, with only one thought-Caroline was still inside.

Alexander desperately tried to rush into the villa but was firmly held back by the people around him.

One man said, “Alexander, calm down! You’ll die if you go in there. We’ve already called the police, and rescue workers will be here soon. She’ll be fine.”

Alexander’s eyes were bloodshot as he stared at the towering flames: “Get out of my way!”

He didn’t know where the strength came from, but he suddenly broke free from the restraints of those around him, ready to throw himself into the fire.

“Alexander!” his friends shouted.

Another violent explosion rang out.

Heavy rain washed over the ground, and the ruins that had been devoured by fire and then extinguished by rain emitted wisps of black smoke. Rescue workers with search dogs looked through the rubble for Caroline’s remains.

Yes, remains. After all, after such a massive fire and successive explosions, no one could have survived.

In the distance, Alexander, covered in blood, ignored the doctor’s advice and insisted on standing in the rain, waiting for the final result.

“She’s here!” A rescue worker’s cry made Alexander, whose eyes had been lifeless, suddenly become agitated.

He dragged his stiff body and rushed over quickly.

The rescue workers had just lifted a corpse from the ruins-its face destroyed, its entire body covered in blood and ash. Due to the massive explosion and fire, the whole corpse had been burned and curled up, its horrific face pointing in Alexander’s direction.

But he still recognized the “owner” of this corpse. Because not long ago, he had personally sent “her” into the fire.
