Chapter 209
Chapter 209
The kids are all staying with Maria and Derek. He insisted on not getting involved because it would appear to show favoritism. I think he wants to sit back and hang out with my father–in–law. They’ve been really friendly with one another lately. It’s why the media is accusing us of influencing his court decisions, I think they’re both just like–minded assholes, along with Knight and Jonas.
After calling a meeting this morning, Ansley took over for Knight who hasn’t taken his eyes off her. He seems upset, and she’s completely ignoring him. I’ve been making assumptions all morning. I’m not sure how I would feel if they were true.
Midnight has been very quiet about it since I asked. That worries me because she usually doesn’t shut up when I ask her seemingly important things. She’s only calm when she doesn’t like to talk about things. Like her past lives and things that she’s shown me that have repeated themselves here with
- me.
“We should get moving,” Ansley says and walks toward her
“I’ll come with you,” I say and step forward.
“Why me?” she asks defensively. Knight growls at her.
“You’re the alpha. It makes more sense for us to present a united front than for me and the Rogue King. You’re the one who put him in the back.” I remind her and get into he passenger seat of her car.
-This is not going to end well, Angel.- Knight says in my head.
-This is the only chance I will ever give her.- I say quietly. I glance back
at him to see the worry fade into sadness. -It was never your place to tell me.-
He nods and walks toward the back of the convoy of SUVs. takes her a moment before she gets in the car. His reaction told me everything I needed to know. Midnight finally makes her presence known.
-You have to be prepared to accept what she’s going to say.- she whispers. -I’ve heard it many times. I know you’ve felt that sting as well. We have everything we need.-
How would it even work? The most obvious thing is that she is a woman. I’ve never been attracted to any woman. In fact, I never liked being around them. It started with my step–mother. We hated one another. She set an example for others. My teachers, doctors, and the girls at school all treated me the way they did because that’s what they knew.
Things have gotten worse since becoming a werewolf. Xo hurt me the most. I saw her as a mentor, someone who was helping me piece my shitty life together. She hurt my baby and turned away from me when I needed her. And it’s always been that way for me. That’s why I struggle to make friends. Allison was no different, apparently. So, yeah. I have felt that sting many times.
“I wanted to thank you for coming,” I break the silence. She stiffens, gripping the steering wheel tightly.
“My father calls and I follow orders,” she says stiffly. “You don’t have to thank me. Thank him.”
“I wanted to ask you something, if that’s okay with you,”
“What?” she glances at me.
“Why did you try to kill me when you thought I was sleeping with your dad?” I ask. Her gasp is audible. “You clearly don’t care about what either he does or your brother. It felt very personal. Your entire demeanor towards me does. If you have something to tell me. You should get it out now before we’re forced to work together.”
“You annoy me,” she shrugs. “And I do care what happens to my family. It’s one thing for them to take advantage of others, and it’s another for others to take advantage of them. After all, they are still men and the only thing they think with is their cock.”
“Is that why you can’t reject me to my face, because I annoy you?” Lask.
The car swerves to the right. The tires make a loud zip sound just before she rights the truck again. I laugh because this is one of those fucked up situations where I have nothing else but my nervous laughing.

“Did he tell you that?”
“No, but you make it obvious. My wolf likes staying away from you, which is odd to me because she always wants to know if someone is a friend of a
There still is, but I’ve learned to cope with the pace, snack. I didn’t pick up on it before because there was always so much going on.
“You can’t understand,” she huffs.
“What exactly? That it’s insane that your mate is a female?”
“I’ve had girlfriends,” she shakes her head.
“So, Knight is the problem. You don’t want to share with him.”
“Do you
know what you’re saying?” she asks.
“Yeah, this whole time I’ve been thinking about how I’m going to help my kids when the time comes. Especially because they’re so different. Ayrie is the heir to the Rogue throne, and Aizen is an alpha.
“Knight has told me a little about how it was growing up for the two of you, how he was so much more aggressive than you. How you wanted to keep up, and he would put you in your place. How your father had to split the two of you up and how Maria left you behind when they left.”
“Is there a question in there, or are you just recapping my greatest hits?” she sneers.
“I know exactly what it’s like to be left behind. To watch your father favor someone else without knowing what you did to make him hate you. It’s easy to hate everyone around you because they wouldn’t understand what makes you who you are.
“You don’t owe me anything. Not an explanation or an apology. That’s not what I want from you. I need you to be upfront with me. It’s an obvious yes or no answer. So that when the day comes and my twins ask me what they should do regarding the predicament they might find themselves in, I have an answer to give them as the shared mate in question.”
“It’ll be different for them. Their parents aren’t complete assholes,” she says quietly. “My parents were never the problem. Nathan and I are not exactly different. We are alphas. The difference was that he was always stronger than I. Smarter. He doesn’t ask. He demands.
“I wasted my entire childhood trying to catch up to him, only for him to turn around and tell us that our efforts didn’t mean shit to him. He turned his back on me. He did. I’ve been cleaning up after him since Maria took him from me.
“I didn’t understand why he wouldn’t just kill her until I met you. I had more than one chance to end you before the bond cemented. I wanted to. It would have given me everything I had ever wanted. His strength and everything he ran away from in his entire life.
“I can’t reject you, Phoebe. And I can’t bring myself to look at you because of what I did. If you want the dreams to stop, if you wish the urge to come near me, and the sense of my brother when I’m around to go away. You’re going to have to reject me.
“While you make up your mind, I am going to make this pack wish they never would have called on you to be their alpha. I’m going to kill Allison for stringing along the way she did.
“That’s my job. I’m the only one allowed to play with your feelings like that. All I want from you is to sit back and look as pretty as you do while I burn them all into submission. That is as much upfront as you’re going to get from me.”
