Chapter 29: Marcus Feels Like a Furnace
Inside the station.
Ella gently wiped the tears from the corners of Stella’s eyes.
She could tell–Stella still had feelings for Caleb. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have cried the moment he
showed up.
The two looked like they were in the middle of a cold war.
Ella cut straight to the point. “Stella, Caleb showed up so fast. I don’t think he’s over you.”
Stella bit her lip. “We’re getting divorced. What’s the point in talking about this anymore?”
She was the one who brought up the divorce, and Caleb had agreed.
All that was left was a signature, and they’d be nothing to each other.
But lately, Caleb hadn’t even come home.
Stella had gone to all the clubs he usually hung out at, but he never showed. It was…strange.
Ella sighed. She couldn’t help but feel like there was some misunderstanding between the two.
“I think you should reconsider the divorce. Maybe he’s not coming home because he doesn’t want to split, but he just doesn’t know how to say it. Since you still care, why not talk to him honestly?”
Stella didn’t answer.
At that moment, Marcus came out, having finished the paperwork.
The three walked out of the police station together.
Caleb had just finished a cigarette and was leaning against the hood of his car. “Well, look at that. Someone did come to bail you out. But he’s here for Ella, right? You just got lucky tagging along?”

Stella: “…”
Caleb strolled over and opened the back door. “Come on. Don’t tell me you’re still trying to play third wheel?”
Stella shot him a cold glare and said flatly,
“Caleb, the only thing hard about you is your mouth.”
Without waiting for a reply, she got into the car.
Caleb let out a low laugh, full of mischief. “My mouth’s the only thing that’s hard? I wouldn’t be so
sure, Stella. Wanna test that theory?”
The second she heard that, her face turned red. She glared at him furiously. “You shameless jerk!”
Caleb didn’t say anything else. He got in, waved lazily at Marcus, and gestured for the driver to head
out.
Outside the station, only Ella and Marcus remained.
Ella hadn’t expected Caleb to start flirting so shamelessly in front of everyone, with no way to stop him.
Blushing, she looked up cautiously at Marcus.
He lowered his eyes, expression calm, and reached out to take her hand.
“Why are your hands so cold?”
As he spoke, he tucked her hand into his coat pocket.
So warm.
When they got home, the first thing Ella did was head to the bathroom to clean off the blood.
By the time she came out, it was already 3:30 a.m.
Only a warm bedside lamp was still on. Marcus was leaning against the headboard in silk pajamas.

The top two buttons were undone, revealing his sculpted collarbone–sexy in a restrained, almost
ascetic way.
He didn’t ask her what had happened at the bar, or why she was covered in blood.
He simply patted the empty half of the bed. “Come here.”
Ella nodded, lifted the covers, and lay down.
Maybe she was too exhausted. The moment her head hit the pillow, she fell asleep.
Marcus had been about to move toward her, but froze mid–action.
He frowned slightly, glanced at the unopened little box on the nightstand, then looked at the now–sound–asleep Ella beside him.
A strange silence hung in the air. With a helpless sigh, he lay down properly.
Ella didn’t sleep very still. The moment she shifted into his arms, Marcus’s whole body stiffened.
His Adam’s apple bobbed. The soft scent from her body drifted into his nose, making his temples
hrob.
She was like a little fox–seductive without even realizing it.
A heat surged through him, wild and uncontrollable.
Marcus took several deep breaths, but it didn’t help. If anything, it made things worse.
n the end, he gave up and went out to the balcony, chain–smoking to cool off.
[e made a call. Not long after, a video came through on his phone.
was high–definition footage of Ella beating the crap out of Liam at the bar, with audio crystal clear.
[arcus watched the clip. If Ella could go that hard on Liam, she’d definitely let him go emotionally.
e had worried she might feel awkward if they ran into Liam at a Byrne family event.

But now? Clearly, he’d overthought it.
News of Liam getting beat up by Ella had exploded overnight. The entire elite circle was buzzing.
After all, it used to be Ella chasing Liam, but now she was the one who sent him to the hospital.
Pair that with the recent headlines of Liam and Natalie sneaking off to a hotel together–even an idiot could piece together what happened.
Liam cheated, and Ella, in a fit of rage, went full savage on him. Seemed fair.
But at the same time, it indirectly proved that Ella and Liam’s engagement had never actually been
called off early on.
9
It was only after the media exposed Liam and Natalie’s hotel scandal that both families, trying to save face, were forced to claim the engagement had been broken off long ago.
Natalie’s reputation? In the toilet.
When Ella woke up, the other side of the bed was empty.
She vaguely remembered spending the night in a warm embrace.
Ella was naturally cold, but Marcus was like a furnace–hot, comforting. She’d instinctively curled
nto him.
ust imagining the scene made her bury herself deeper in the covers, face red to her ears.
She hadn’t meant to! Would he think she was being too forward?
But then again, they were married. Cuddling in bed wasn’t illegal.
uckily, Marcus had left early. She really didn’t know how she’d face him otherwise.
ight then, her phone rang.
t was Damian.
he’d almost forgotten she even had a father.

The moment she picked up, Damian’s furious voice blasted through.
“Ella, what the hell were you thinking? Why’d you hit Liam? Do you know who he is? He’s part of the Byrne family! You want to drag me down with you?!”
Ella frowned. “He’s the one who grabbed me first. What, I was supposed to just take it? I’m not Natalie. I don’t cling to a man who’s already engaged.”
Damian was stunned into silence.
Ella had never talked back like this before–not even when she was pissed.
Clearly, Liam and Natalie’s engagement had pushed her past her limit.
99
His voice turned icy. “I don’t care how jealous you are. Liam and Natalie’s engagement is official. Nothing’s going to change that.”
They still thought she was just throwing a tantrum to win Liam back.
Ella laughed coldly and couldn’t be bothered to explain.
Damian’s voice carried a warning. “Get to the hospital and apologize to Liam. Once he and Natalie
are married, we’ll all be family. Don’t make this worse.”
