Chapter 23: The Legitimate Mrs. Byrne
Ella seemed startled, not even glancing at the man on the sofa. She pushed him away and ran into the room without looking back.
The moment she closed the door, Marcus, who had been drunk and unconscious, suddenly regained clarity in his eyes.
He gently touched his thin lips, still lingering in the sensation.
At that moment, a text from Caleb arrived: “Are you home?
Marcus: “Mm.”
Caleb: “Replying so quickly? Are you really drunk?”
Marcus turned his head to glance at the closed door.
His lips unconsciously curled upward, and after a few seconds, he typed: “I’m getting married
tomorrow.”
The sudden topic change left Caleb speechless for a moment.
When he finally reacted, he couldn’t help but tease: “No way, did you dream that the government gave you a wife?”
Marcus, with a tone of satisfaction, typed: “You’re right. My wife is currently in my room, lying in my bed.”
Caleb on the other end fell silent for a full minute.
“Ella?”
Marcus: “Mm.”
Caleb: “What are you two doing in the room?”

Marcus: “A man and a woman, late at night, drunk, alone in a room, what do you think happened? Can I really tell you?”
Caleb felt Marcus was being too cheeky. He didn’t say anything directly, but each word was full of implication.
Marcus: “No hidden meaning. Just reminding you to remember to give your sister–in–law a wedding gift.”
Caleb: “…”
He had guessed Marcus was in the mood for something else when he suddenly wanted to chat so
much at this hour.

Apparently, he was just thinking about his wedding gift.
On the other side, after Ella closed the door to the room, her heart raced wildly.
She lay on the bed, took deep breaths for a long time before slowly calming down.
Who would have thought her first kiss would go to a man she’d only met a few times?
Even more absurdly, tomorrow she was going to register her marriage with this man, and she didn’t even know his full name.
Ella had never been interested in any man other than Liam, let alone such intimate contact.
Actually, the reason she was rushing into marriage wasn’t just to find a place to settle down. She was exhausted.
After enduring the most brutal abandonment and witnessing the darkest sides of human nature, she just wanted to find someone to live a peaceful life with.
She knew deep down that her past with Liam was over. Since she had decided to marry, she was ready to start anew with another man.
But was this moving too fast?
On the first night together, they had already kissed?

The more she thought about it, the more her cheeks flushed.
She involuntarily curled into the blanket, tossing and turning, trying to force herself not to think
about it.
She lay there, eventually falling asleep in a daze. When she woke up, the sun had already risen.
After freshening up, she stood there, fiddling with her fingers, wondering whether or not she should go out.
Just then, there was a knock at the door.
Marcus’s deep, magnetic voice came from outside: “Are you awake?”
Ella froze for a moment, took a deep breath, then walked to open the door.
What greeted her eyes was the handsome face of the man.
He was dressed in a classic white shirt and black pants, wearing a bow tie that accentuated his noble air to the fullest–like he had stepped out of a comic.
Their
gazes met, and Marcus’s adam’s apple moved slightly as his dark eyes locked onto Ella’s full red lips. “Come out for breakfast.”
Ella lowered her head slightly.
His expression remained unchanged, so he probably didn’t remember that they had kissed last night, right?
Of course, drunk people hardly ever remember what happened.
Ella let out a quiet sigh of relief and followed him into the dining room.
3reakfast was a bowl of tomato egg noodles, and even though he was eating noodles, the way he did
t made it feel like he was having a high–end Western meal.
There were no servants in the house, so… did he make this himself?
She was staying in his home, waking up later than the host, and now he was making her

food–wasn’t that a bit presumptuous?
“About that…” Ella looked up at him, hesitating to speak. “From now on, I’ll make breakfast.”
Upon hearing this, Marcus put down his chopsticks, as if knowing what she was thinking.
“We don’t worry about such things in our own home.”
“Our own home?”
Ella froze for a moment. Those five words stirred something in her heart, like a gentle breeze rippling the surface of a calm lake.
She had her own home now…?
“Eat more.” Marcus placed a meatball from his plate onto Ella’s. He was naturally and casually doing it, “I don’t want you to be too thin.”
Ella pursed her lips, nodding absentmindedly.
She was too thin–168 cm tall but weighing less than 90 kg. It was unhealthy.
After finishing the meal, Ella tried to wash the dishes, but Marcus stopped her.
“A cleaning lady will come later to clean up, so you don’t need to do anything.”
“What do I need to do, then?”
“Gain weight.”

Suddenly, Ella remembered something important.
“I still don’t know your name.”
Marcus paused for a moment as he was buttoning his jacket, then turned around.
Their eyes met, and his large hand gripped her wrist.

Before she could react, he intertwined their fingers.
Feeling his warm hand enveloping hers, Ella looked up in surprise and met Marcus’s half–smiling
eyes.
“Marcus Byrne, your husband.”
Ella froze. He also shared the surname Byrne?
That name seemed familiar.
As she was lost in thought, Marcus leaned down, his warm breath brushing against her face, sending a tingling sensation through her.
“In front of me, there’s no need to be too restrained. After all, last night… we kissed, didn’t we? Mrs.
Byrne.”
Ella:

In an instant, it felt like an electric shock. She clenched her fingers without realizing it.
What was going on? He actually remembered last night?
Then why, when she saw him this morning, did he act like nothing had happened?
So… teasing.
On the way to the marriage license bureau, Ella felt dazed.
By the time they finished the process and she had the marriage certificate in her hands, she still
hadn’t fully processed what had happened.
Under the sunlight, the red little book gleamed brightly.
It was then that Ella realized she had become the legitimate Mrs, Byrne,
But the groom wasn’t the Liam she had fantasized about a million times.
It was a man who shared the same surname but was completely unrelated–Marcus Byrne.

Marcus’s deep–set brows met her gaze, “Are you thinking about another man?”
Ella’s eyes darkened.
The bitter emotións silently crept up her chest:
It wasn’t because of Liam.
It was for herself, for the version of herself that had been so obsessed for so many years.
Marcus’s eyes deepened as his large hand wrapped around her fingers.
Before Ella could react, he slid a diamond ring onto her ring finger.
The design wasn’t overly flashy, but it was exactly the style she liked.
