Christian hung his head in shame. He said, “I’m sorry, Mr. Lynn. Withholding information is the worst offense for a secretary, especially when I was your secretary and you trusted me so much. I failed you. Please, go ahead and blame me.”
Jonathan squeezed his eyes shut, his fists clenching tightly. He thought, ‘It wasn’t just Christian–so many others close to
me had betrayed my trust.‘
He slowly opened his eyes, his gaze chillingly emotionless. He said, “No company would ever hire a secretary brazen
enough to scheme against and deceive their superior.”
Before Christian could say a word, Sherry’s face suddenly paled. She pleaded, “Mr. Lynn, please, I’m begging you. Don’t utterly destroy Christian.
“He’s had such a hard life–he just lost both his parents. He’s the pride and hope of his hometown. Please, have mercy.”
Jonathan cut Sherry off with an impatient sneer. He snapped, “I don’t want to hear this. He’s had it tough? What about
me? It’s not my fault he lost both his parents.
“But you did you plan to keep Mike from ever knowing me? You treated Mike as if he were your own, and played me for a
fool time and again.”
Seeing Jonathan’s merciless attitude, Sherry burst into tears. She said, “Mr. Lynn, Mike is perfectly fine, isn’t he? He’s healthy. We just kept it from you, and that’s all. Please, for the sake of no real harm being done, spare Christian.”
Jonathan sneered, “Spare him? So, in your eyes, the fact that my son and I couldn’t be reunited, that he grew up without a father’s love and had to treat his real dad as a stranger–you call that a minor issue?
“But your husband losing his job–that’s the real tragedy, isn’t it?”
Sherry choked, completely silenced by Jonathan’s retort. She suddenly realized that some secrets were meant to be taken to the grave, or confessed right away.
Sherry clung desperately to Christian’s arm, sobbing uncontrollably. She cried, “How did it come to this? Teresa told me Mr. Lynn wouldn’t hold us responsible.”
At the mention of Teresa’s name, a subtle ripple flickered across Jonathan’s previously impassive face. He said, “Teresa has no idea who I am.” He added inside, ‘Nor do I truly understand her.‘
Christian, who had been silent all this time, finally spoke up. He said, “Mr. Lynn, no matter how you choose to punish me, I
have no complaints. You’re right.
“When I was your secretary, I withheld such crucial information and even let you believe Mike was my son. With such unworthy conduct, I don’t deserve to remain at Nareigh any longer. Mr. Lynn, just blacklist me if that’ll make you feel
better.”
Jonathan raised an eyebrow, his expression seeming to retort, “Do you think I dare not? Just a mere secretary.”
Seeing that Jonathan was truly determined to destroy Christian’s career prospects completely, Sherry broke down in even more desperate sobs, pleading with Jonathan over and over through her tears.

She pleaded desperately, “Mr. Lynn, except for this one incident of withholding information, Christian has always been dedicated and responsible.

“Please, we’re just ordinary people–how would we ever dare go against someone as powerful as you? Please, just spare
us.”
Christian gently took Sherry’s hand and said, “Sherry, that’s enough. I’ve been expecting this all along.”
Sherry said tearfully, “But I just can’t bear to see your reputation tarnished.” She turned to Jonathan once more, her voice trembling with desperation as she apologized again.
She said, “Mr. Lynn, it’s all my fault. From the very beginning, Christian wanted to come clean about Mike to you, but I was the one who kept holding him back, time and again.
“If you want to settle the score, then settle it with
- me. Please, spare the father of my child.”
