I hadn’t seen Danny in a long time.
He wasn’t answering my calls.
So I went to his place.
He answered the door.
く
He must’ve just gotten off work. He was still
wearing his suit, but he’d taken off his tie.
“Come in.”
He was cold.
My rejection must’ve really hurt him.
He looked at me with a hint of sadness.
“What is it? You never come to see me.”
“I don’t hate you.”
For the first time, I wanted to tell him how I
really felt.
His eyes lit up for a second, but then quickly
dimmed.
く
“You just don’t hate me. But you still don’t
like me.
“Danny, Vince told me you knew there was
something in the drink eight years ago, right?”
Danny froze.
He nodded.
“I knew, but I wasn’t sure. I didn’t care if it
was poisoned or not. I…” His voice sounded
rough. “I drank it willingly. So I never blamed you. I just don’t understand why you regretted it.”
“Vince said we’re all characters in a book,
and his actions triggered a butterfly effect
that made you not like me anymore.”
I thought I saw tears in his eyes.
My nose burned.
“No, I do like you. I…’
My head was a mess.
I told him about everything I’d seen, that
Vince had experienced.
It sounded crazy, but Danny had already
heard some of it from Vince, so he accepted
it pretty quickly.
“So you think we’ll turn on each other?
Everyone will die, so you’ve been avoiding me
all this time?”
Danny laughed through his tears. “Then why
く
are you here now?”
“Vince said that if you feel pain, you’re real.
He says I’m the heroine, so I…I don’t want to
run anymore.”
