Once I realised 6

Once I realised 6

I had to change my number again.

It felt like I was running for my life.

I left Chicago and went to Atlanta.

This time I was smarter. I asked my sister to

keep me updated on Danny’s movements.

I ran whenever he came to my city.

He’d arrive one day, and I’d leave the next.

Then I got a job offer that took me overseas,

and I stopped running.

I worked abroad for six years, going from

broke to rich.

I came back to the States because my sister

was sick.

She wanted to throw a welcome-home party

for me.

Danny and Vince were there too.

Danny was even more mature than I

remembered.

Time hadn’t left too many marks on his face,

but he had a certain depth now.

“Paris, long flight, huh?”

He didn’t seem surprised to see me.

It was like time had washed everything away.

But he and my sister never got married. I

guess my antics had affected their

relationship.

Some people had kids, others were still

playboys.

My sister had a good job.

Danny was the most successful of all. He

invested, and now he’s the CEO. Word on the

street is he bought a few condos in the Windy

City.

After a few rounds, a lot of people were

drunk, except for Danny. He hadn’t touched a

drop.

# # DI

simping over Danny, huh?”

Every eye in the room snapped to me.

I glanced at Danny. He was still smiling and

pouring drinks for everyone, like the whole

thing had nothing to do with him.

“That was just kid stuff. I probably gave

Danny a hard time back then. I’m way over

him.’

وو

I touched the ring on my finger.

“I’m practically getting married, y’all. I’ll invite

you to the wedding.”

Then I heard glass shatter.

Danny was staring at his soaked shoes, eyes

く

bloodshot, like he’d just seen a ghost.
