Werner froze, and then the realization hit him. “Now I get it. Cathy sent you to spy on me. You’re actually helping her investigate me? Jonathan. I’m deeply disappointed in you.”
Werner turned to leave, but Sanford yanked him back.
“You still haven’t answered me. What exactly is going on between you and my mom? Why would you give her so much money, even if it means ruining yourself? Were you afraid we’d see something on the surveillance footage?” asked Sanford.
Werner gave Sanford a complicated look, then shook him off impatiently. He snapped, “You’re better off not knowing. It won’t do you any good to know
too much.”
Werner tried to leave again, but Sanford clamped down on his arm with an iron grip.
Sanford finally understood, and his heart sank like a stone. “What else are you two hiding from us?” he demanded.
Werner snapped, “I told you, knowing too much won’t do you any good. Your mother doesn’t have much time left. What you need to do now is take good
care of her.”
“Precisely because my mom is dying, I need to know the whole truth now. I have every right to know everything about her. I’m her son. If she dies with all these grievances, how am I supposed to make it right for her?”
Werner abruptly fell silent. He said, his voice heavy with pain, “Son, your mother hasn’t been wronged at all!”
“So, what is it you can’t say?” he demanded. “Don’t think for a second I haven’t figured it out. There’s a secret between you two, a massive one.”
Werner averted his gaze, stubbornly repeating, “I told you, I don’t know anything!”
Sanford snapped, “Do you take me for a fool? If you ‘don’t know anything,‘ then why
were you so eager to cut the power?
“You’re scared my mom and Irene said something that would incriminate you, aren’t you? I bet their whole feud probably stems from you.”
Werner snapped, “Stop making wild accusations. This has nothing to do with me.”
Sanford sneered, his words cutting deep. “So, what are you so afraid of? You coward.”
Werner’s eyes bulged as he glared at Sanford. “Say that again!”
Sanford snapped, “Am I wrong? Isn’t this exactly how a coward acts? It’s painfully obvious there’s something going on between you and my mom. I bet that money you gave her was hush money.”
Werner never expected Sanford to be so sharp; he’d practically hit the nail on the head.
He then glanced at Jonathan, who remained as calm and composed as ever. Werner was certain Jonathan must have thought the same thing. “You two brats are sticking your noses where they don’t belong.”
